Went to an AG last week with the express intention of buying new shoes, the Greenjoys I bought ~ 2 years ago when I picked up the game are in pretty bad shape.

Unfortunately the sales chap was completely disinterested in my presence, he came across as either not knowing anything or not giving a flying ****, either way I was not impressed. Shame as a different guy in the same shop was a great help the last time I went. Its a lottery.

I would have liked to try the XPS-1s having heard the hype behind them pre-release, but things have gone quiet since - are they really the holy grail we were promised? I did like the Sport and was just about to order some, but at the last minute I read reviews here its a mixed bag - argh! When I went to Direct Golf a week or so ago they had neither of these shoes, and the sales guy did his best to punt me Nike Lunars, which felt okay but he was a bit pushy and I felt like he was pushing them because he didn't have the shoes I came in to try.

I know there's a shoe thread here every other day but if I do spend £170 on a pair of shoes I'll really have to justify it to myself*

I believe the standard response to these threads is to spend the money on lessons instead :D

Ha ha! Indeed, but I do need new shoes, the Greenjoys have long since past their best and besides they're a half size too big (I've been getting around it by doubling up on socks, but as the warm weather comes in that's going to result in something very nasty...). I'm a believer in buy once by well so not looking at the cheaper shoes, in light of the fact they'll (hopefully) last me years I think its worth spending a few quid on them

Simply buy yourself a pair of Nike Lunar control shoes, save yourself 100 notes and be confused no more :)Best shoes I have had by a distance.

I have a pair of lunars and they are pretty nifty, probs no help to u, but I like them. Never been a fan of footjoy shoes, but is there not another shop near by you can go to?,

I have the XPS-1s I won last year but have only just started wearing them as they aren't really a winter shoe because A) They're White and B) the sole collects mud like it's gone out of fashion. The one time I did wear them over winter they took ages to clean.

I can't give you a comparison to other shoes in the price range as I won't spend £170 on a pair of shoes so these are just about double the price of any shoe I have ever bought. What I can tell you is that they are comfortable, I wore them for the first time last Saturday and again on Tuesday and had no issues with rubbing or blisters. My feet get pretty hot in my greenjoys\ultralites and the last few rounds I wore either of those my socks were a little sweaty after the round but no such issues with the XPS's on Tuesday.

Whether the stabilising system does work and definately restricts lateral movement - whether it helps me or not is impossible to say.

Are they the shoe of all shoes? You'll have to ask Homer as he has a pair amongst his 16 pairs of footjoys so is probably better placed to comment.

Would I buy a pair with my own cash? I'll have to give them a few more weeks of play and compare them to my mid range shoes

Nope! I did like the Lunars, just felt pressured and recoiled because of it, perhaps I should reconsider. Because I'm looking for a half size in FJ my pro shop would have to order them in and at £120 I might as well get them on ebay for £80 and wait the same length of time, that was what I was about to do when I read the mixed reviews here. I'd like to support the pro shop but £40 would pay for a lesson or two with the same pro

I have several pairs of FJ's + a pair of Oakleys. HID bought me MJ Icons about 4 months ago, supremely comfortable, completely waterproof and after about 20 rounds they look like new. From a FJ fan buy FJ's

This. Mine are a year old and pretty worn in but got round 36 holes at Woburn yesterday (which is NOT flat) with no issues (and I have a bad foot). My feet were aching a bit after a full day, but that was purely down to being stood up for over 10 hours yesterday!

It does get confusing as there is little agreement on here about most shoes. Everyone has different feet and so some will swear by one brand and model, while others think they are the most uncomforatable shoes ever.

Some sports take shoes really seriously. I run a lot and the science that goes into getting the right shoe for your foot and gait is pretty full on. Depending on your foot shape , particularly if you have high or dropped arches, some shoes will be suitable while others will give you serious grief.

Golf on the other hand assumes everyone's feet will be fine in the same sole and inner style. Admittedly we aren't running, but you cover miles and miles in them and they are the only point of contact with the ground when you swing. So, IMO, good shoes are not an extravagance but a necesssity. That doesn't mean they need to be expensive.

The shoes that get good feedback consistently are Most FJ models, Puma, Ecco and Nike Lunar Control.

Quality wise, it seems to be luck of the draw... soem people get bad ones that leak or fall apart quickly, while others buy the same shoe and it lasts forever. That said, the adidas tour models do seem to fare badly in longevity tests.

It's not too difficult.
Put one shoe on your left foot. If it feels weird, try the other one.

FJ AQL. simple
Next question ?

Not what I was expecting on this thread - I'm consistently confused why people pay over £150 for shoes when a £30 pair do the same job! Don't they? Are the top end shoes REALLY worth the extra money?

I would advise against Adidas Tour 360 4.0. I have had mine for around 6 months now, and whilst they are very comfortable, I still seem to get some rubbing on the heel. To reduce this I put some duct tape inside the heel to stop the inner wearing to the sole plate (as this is a known problem with the 4.0). This has helped a bit but is not really ideal.

However I have had a couple of pairs of Adidas shoes and they were fine.

My next shoes will most likely be FJ's or the Lunar Controls.

Boom. I suppose I should be grateful you didn't go down the "If you really like your wifes shoes..." route.

;)

I was in the same frame of mind Matty which is why I reigned it in a bit and was looking at the FJ Sports, if there isn't a massive difference between these and the Lunars I might go with them, but I haven't tried on the XPS and was just curious to see if they were winning in longer term tests.

You make a good point Monty, which is why I want to spend a bit and get quality, the Greenjoys were great shoes for £35 it has to be said, so hence the leaning to FJ, but they're done for now...

I think you have to go a long way to beat a pair of Adidas. My first pair was a pair of £25 adidas shoes, and a year and half later they are still ok (one stud missing). I've bought a new pair and wore them for the first time on Thursday. Spent a little more this time, I think around £80/90 and they are gorgeous! Lovely to look at, soft, oh so soft and soo comfortable. No problems from my round on Thursday.

There are so many good shoes around the £30-£100 mark I just dont see the point of spending more.

Depends IF you look after Shoes per-se........
If you DONT, there aint no point..........

If you DO........then a well made expensive pair of shoes will probably last you for years........

I have 2 pairs of FJ Classic Premier Dry which I got in the US for about £100/pair, and they are simply awesome. Sure, they're quite heavy, but I love the sturdy platform they provide, and they are absolutely superbly made. However, I look after them anally, and this is their 4st summer coming up, they still dont look worn in.
But, waterproof they aint.............but as far as that goes, neither am I !

Ive also got a pair of Adidas Tour 360 Ltd's, again about 4yrs old, and again supremely comfortable. Better than my Classics ? No way.......

My next pair will probably be a pait of FJ Icon Myjoys........
