Computer suddenly gone slow

When my computer slows up is is normally because one or other bits of software is doing an update via download.

Microsoft often does it updates to Windows on a Sunday.

That much disk space being used is really exceptional unless you store masses of photos or videos.

I really don't, which is the odd bit. No music, no videos. Yes to pictures but nothing crazy. We store most in the cloud now. No big programmes either, as far as I am aware.

I did wonder about a mega windows update but even so.......
 
It's working much better this morning, it looks like Windows was trying to do a monster download. I don't think it was succesful, probably not enough space, so I will manually try that overnight to see if it can work.

The used / spare space is still a potential issue so I suspect I will still take the desktop in to be looked at. The bod may clear some dead stuff out or give extra RAM, memory etc. Equally, he may tell me to upgrade in advance of it maxxing out. At least now I am forewarned.

You need to look at your primary drive (usually, but not always C:\) and have a look at installed programs. 871Gb is A LOT to use. If it's a work machine, has it been set-up in a way that it could be duplicating (or even triplicating) storage through a virtual RAID or Virtual System Backup?

Windows 11 is being rolled out currently. It could well have been both the download and/or its failure (?) that caused the slowdown and the huge space usage.
 
as pointed out before, 871 is a massive storage to have for Apps & features. There is obviously something big in there.
1) One of the options at the bottom of the screen will be 'Optimise drive'. try to run it. If it is work comp, then your admins should have set it to run automatically
2) If you have a OneDrive, then you will have a 'Enable Storage Sense' option that can be turned on
3) i could be wrong, but if the machine is downloading an update, it will show up under temp directory rather than Applications. So this is still an Application issue rather than anyting else
4) Check app sizing >> Windows 10 displays app size information next to the list of apps as well. In order to access app size details, you need to go to Settings > Apps and select Apps and Features. The app size is listed in the right-hand pane, next to the apps. You can sort it by size.
5) Delete pr0n

I did point 4, the biggest file was 560mb. I actually added all of the files up and they came to 3.5GB. Where is the other 865gb or so that it states is being used? Where is it hiding? That is what I find weird.

If it is one monster file then it will be easy to fix. if it is lots of tiny slides then it is always difficult to find. Here is how to find large files
