My works desktop has been slowing up and today has been painful. We run avg anti virus and tune up. No viruses or malware, tune up has us at 98%. I've just checked the storage and it is saying 931gb used, 42.6mb spare ?.

I've gone into the apps and features column, 871gb, but the visible numbers don't reach anywhere near, the largest single file shows 549mb, all in total looks around 10gb. Where the heck is the other 800gb plus that I'm supposedly using?

Any suggestions?

What version operating system are you using? If it's a new OS, how did you get it (e.g. upgrade or fresh install?)

You need to look at your primary drive (usually, but not always C:\) and have a look at installed programs. 871Gb is A LOT to use. If it's a work machine, has it been set-up in a way that it could be duplicating (or even triplicating) storage through a virtual RAID or Virtual System Backup?

It is Windows 10. I think we were originally 8 but it upgraded at some stage.

We don't have any fancy programs on it, no design software or similar.

We haven't changed the set up since we got it but that doesn't mean something hasn't changed.

How do I find the primary drive? Is that in the storage settings or elsewhere?

Perhaps time to check with your Company IT Support.
They may be able to help identify whether it's something unique to your machine or something affecting several/many/all. Often difficult to contact though!

It also doesn't mean that there is potentially a back-up system being run that's using the physical device hard drive rather than a server or cloud based back up. As your system uses more space it's impact is felt more and more. As I say, 8701Gb is a lot of space to use, in context, I have a drive that I store game files on (there's 8 full games on there at the minute plus all my music and video files) and it's only 660Gb.

You need to speak to your ITSD if you have one and ask about the set-up.

Also, slow down can be caused by memory usage as well as storage issues. So also best to check that there is nothing sucking the life out of your RAM in the task manager.

Lastly, the age of the machine plays a part, or more specifically the age of the components (and their speed). I'm seeing more apps being updated and increasing their memory or CPU utilisation, or updates that demand higher memory speeds from the same apps.

BTW, how do u know it is slow?
Pages, internet or word processor type files, that would usually just open instantly are taking an age. Typing, moving around, the response time is like a computer back in the 80's. It is Sinclair Spectrum slow ?. I use this computer every day at work, no one else, so it stands out, the difference.

Thanks for this. I'll have another play around in the morning. If I can't resolve it then there is a computer shop where I live that has a good reputation. I'll drop it off with them and see if they can help. It might be a simple job for someone who knows their way behind the scenes of a computer. I can do some basics but not the clever stuff.

I use PrivaZer to wipe my temp files, cache and the like. I'm runnng Windows 10, and it has a habit of going slow every now and then and clearing out all the temp crap always seems to help.
I use the clear internet history and cache options, but have done deeper wipes with it.
It is free:)

I am the IT support, ?. More accurately, you guys are the IT support ?
:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
Deep trouble then!
Does seem pretty important to find out what that 860Gb usage is though.
Also, could be worthwhile to go and make/consume dinner/supper/tea (geo dependent) and see what happens when you return. Lay off the wine though (personal experience, but tested the back/restore process!:censored:).
