Can anyone help please?

My Wife has a notebook and is on Internet Explorer and cannot connect to the internet.

I have a laptop and on Firefox without any connection problems.

We have a wireless router and usually everything's fine, but the notebook just has a message, "connection problem".

Any help greatly appreciated.

Look at the wireless icon near the clock (bottom right corner)
what is the connection status? you might have to disconnect and reconnect the wifi and reinput the security code

another thing to try is resetting Internet Explorer
To do this hit start, control panel, internet options, advanced, reset

follow it through

shout back on your progress

Check "available networks" on the notebook,to see if it is actually working wirelessly. If all is well then you need to connect to your chosen router, this usually involves entering the encrypted keycode/password.

The icon says not connected.

Ok
i suspect that the wifi switch has been turned off

look at the front or side of the laptop, you are looking for a small rocker switch,
if you cant see one, its possible that there is a keyboard switch. look at the top line on the keypad and look for one that looks like an arial, you might need to press alt then this key

Phone your ISP.

My old laptop used to do this every now and again. Simple resets did not work.

If one laptop is OK and the other not, then it's some setting within windows or your wi-fi hardware is messed up.

Either way, I'd imagine your ISP will sort you out.

What OS are you running on the Notebook? If you can open the Wireless Utility on the bottom right hand corner of your screen you should first check to see if you are discovering any Wireless networks at all.

As Phil mentioned its possible that the WLAN card has been disabled, most modern notebooks have a switch and/or function key to enable/disable. This seems the likely cause if the notebook was once working fine on wireless.

If you can discover networks you should see your network (hopefully you can identify yours) and then connect to it. You may want to key in the encrytion passphrase assuming it is a secured network!!

If you click on the wifi icon again, is it picking up any wifi signals at all?

if so, then you need to disconnect and then reconnect the one that is yours,

If it is not picking up anything, then the wifi is switched off or disabled.

Try this, Start, RIGHT CLICK Computer, properties, Device Manager (left hand side top)
click to the left of Network Adapters, this opens the list

Now right click on the wifi adapter, if the word "Enable" is there, it means that your wifi is currently disabled and you should click on it.
If it says "Disable" leave it alone

Otherwise its a job for a local PC guy

Thanks again Phil.

I took it into the local PC Help and he did pretty much as you describe above.

He also deleted Norton Security which had apparently ran out and downloaded AVG for me.

All this for the princely sum of £16, which was good value I thought.

Trouble is, as good as you experts are, it must be just as frustrating for you as well, trying to educate a computer "Numpty" like myself, :mmm: and not being sat in front of the computer isn't easy.
