Hello,

I'm a complete newbie looking to start playing the game. I've always been interested in playing golf, but not had the time to. However now I do.

I'm looking for some hints/tips/guidance - anything is welcome.

I don't have any clubs at the minute so will be looking for some soon. What recommendations do you all have?

I'm located in Lincolnshire, UK, but do work away so will hopefully be playing on a variety of courses.

So, what tips and guidance do you all have? I know I won't be going out there being the next Henrik Stenson or Bubba Watson, just want to enjoy my odd weekend that I have free or the odd evening enjoying a game of golf.

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Would suggest that to begin with you find a club/range that runs beginner sessions where there is a level of coaching in basic fundamentals like grip & posture and they will lend you clubs for the session. Quick google says Lincoln golf centre do such a thing for 45 quid for 6 hour long group sessions on a Monday night if that is near you.

Hi,

I am new to golf too! I posted a few weeks ago and got some great advice from the guys here.

I have had two group lessons and they have been brilliant at explaining the very basics of golf. It's a course of five 1hour lessons where it teaches you the very basics. They also do the same course that fits into a day however don't know how that compares.

I tried emailing a few local pros about beginner courses and many of them didn't have the courtesy of a response and one cancelled last minute on me becuase I was the only person booked up and wasn't worth his while just doing the lessons with me.

In the end I popped into a local golf club and had a chat to the pro and he was more than happy to chat with me. I went for a taster session and got on really well with him and I booked up for the above sessions.

I am fortunate that I have been given some clubs however there will be a point in the future where I'll want to by my own.

Not a lot to go on but all I will say is don't rush and buy the first thing you see however tempting it is!

Group sessions are the way to go. It's how I started last year. You don't have to buy equipment and if you find out you don't like it you are only £50 out of pocket. If you like it you already have contacts on the same level you are.

welcome on board

find a PGA Pro nearby ..... you can get a series of lessons - some will do kinda 'taster group' lessons for folks either just starting or getting back in to the game

often times they will have the odd club you can borrow first off if it's mentioned on sign up that currently you don't have any - also you can then get some real good hands on advice about clubs when looking to purchase

then after a bunch of lessons even get a 'static club fit' as to what ideally may be the ways to start re - grip size, shaft length weight, lie angle, flex - so maybes along the lines first off a 3 metal, 5 metal, 5,6,7,8,9, pw, sw, putter to launch off with

but would save yourself a whole bunch of pain by having lessons from the get-go as golf is very much a counter-intuitive game and teaching yourself or lessons from a well meaning buddy usually ends up with a good bunch of stuff from hold on the handle to set-up alignments, address posture that are not going to be conducive to being able to have a functional swing motion - it's a good bunch harder to put right once bad ingrained habits have set in

folks often have played other sports and stuff that they just picked up themselves and extend that to thinking golf will be the same but for the large majority of folks this is not how it works out

lessons first off would be the best route you could take

Welcome to the madhouse andy , once you enter you cannot leave :D

What part of the county are you in ? As above there are several clubs that do starter sessions

welcome to the frustration and addiction that is golf.

Heyup Grimsby and welcome to the forum. You will get loads of advice on here and most of what has been said I would only endorse. Lessons are the way forward. Even seasoned pros have lessons.
Once you have started hitting it and hitting it well, second hand clubs are the way forward.
Good luck me man.

Thanks for all the welcomes everyone!

I'm from a town called Cleethorpes, where Grimsby Town FC play! Will have a dig about and see who offers lessons nearby to me. Are there any differences between the PGA pros? Or are they all more or less of the same stature?
