6000 jobs on the line as Comet apply to go into admin!

Maplin have said they may take some stores but only a handful.

Can't see anyone coming in for them, retail is on its backside and I know that first hand!

Big question is being asked, have dividends been taken out with the full knowledge of the ship sinking!

to expensive and crap customer service, plenty of on line outlets selling the same stuff and lets face it they do sell non essential goods.

Think you'll find, these days, that fridges, cookers and washing machines are fairly essential

And would you be saying the same if TM or Ping went bust? Probably more "non-essential" than fridges etc......

Problemis that white goods last longer these days and the growth of Amazon has meant that people buy through peer recommendation online where it's also cheaper. Throw in the fact that few staff in places like Comet actually have an informed opinion on their products...

That said its always sad to see people lose their jobs, especially this close to Xmas.

Last nights news report centered on the refusal of Comet to embrace internet selling as their cause of decline. In the last 10 years they doggedly kept to selling in large and expensive retail warehouses and their internet presence was poor. Where will we go to look and feel our white goods now, prior to buying online?

Currys......

It's another nail in the coffin of retail stores. It won't be long before the only shops out there are Tesco Mega Mega Mega stores.

It's not surprising. There are too many other places where you can get 'cheap' white goods - amazon being top of the list. However, it's not just that, everything in their stores, from fridge freezers to computer speakers and Playstation games, were more expensive than everywhere else. I think they became the shop where people go to have a look, then buy it online cheaper!

We all need white goods. If Comet were brilliant then they would not have gone bust but the fact is that Comet, Currys and Dixons are all equally useless. They are overpriced. Their sales people are terrible. The customer service is pathetic. They are constantly trying to get you to take out their warranty insurance. It is not a pleasant buying experience.

They have not survived because they are not fit to. I would not be surprised to see Halfords follow suit as they are they same. Overpriced and staffed by the educationally challenged.

As for Tesco megastores being the only place to shop, I disagree. I refuse to shop at Tescos full stop and there are plenty of people that share my view. I don't mind spending more to keep a family business going for any commodity that Tesco sell. Supermarket wise, Waitrose are slightly more expensive but you can shop there ith a clearer conscience. After what Tescos have done to British agriculture, I could not shop there and feel comfortable about it. Plus the quality of plenty of Tescos food is just not acceptable.

Anyway, slight digression but in summary, Comet are bust because they are rubbish. If they were not, they would be trading with stores full of happy customers.

trouble is,do they actualy want to sell you owt?example..washing machine breaks down tonight, jump into the van, drive 20 miles to nearest store, pick new one..i'll have that one mr comet..hears £300.thank you mr customer...you can have it deliverd next week..no no i@ve got a van outside i'll take it now..no you wont everything comes from central warehouse we dont carry stock.or do you turn on computer, order online, still get it next week but save yourself fuel time and salesmen hastling you.an sofas want one of them you be lucky to see it january!!!

agree with the others, my experiences of Comet in the past have always been poor. way way behind currys IMHO. BTW, i read the stores are back open for a short time, so if you have vouchers etc, use them NOW!!!

+1

I hate (a word I don't use lightly) Tescos and all they stand for. They are cancerous to so many family bespoke community businesses as they move in and spread into area's they have no specific skills in and as such its all about mass buying power and sell-out price.

How can they still be classed as trading within the "grocery" sector when selling clothing, white goods and any other retail sector they feel they can move in on sucking the life out of comminty shops.

Tescos purchased some land by me to build a store on but at the moment it has been blocked by the local council but Tesos have all the legal teams and finances to fight and win eventually but if they do no less than 12 shops of varying family sized businesses will close which are all within 50 yards of the proposed store!

I will never set foot in one.
