Club membership

Haven't been on here for a while. But recently my club Pyle and Kenfig in South Wales has reintroduced a waiting list for new members... this has not been known for i would say 20 years at the club but due to the initiatives and drive of the Captains and committee the club finds itself in the position where the books are full.

There are a few clubs struggling in the area so I'd like to know is the popularity of club golf on the rise or decline.

What's your clubs membership like is it strong or weak and what do you think the reasons are for it. And how could it be improved?

Everything about my club is first class so we have a waiting list and a joining fee.
people will pay if the club is good enough and they want to join.
We are the only club in the area who still retains its joining fee.
like it or not that's life.
some clubs have ditched the joining fee but this creates no loyalty to the club.
And some golfers move clubs yearly which may suit them but not me.

plenty of ways to create loyalty to a club without having to charge a joining fee

Where do you play mate?
 
We've just had a notice round from the Committee saying that we have 'closed' our membership and now have a waiting list. We've also felt it appropriate to re-introduce a joining fee. Our membership across all categories stands at 725.

Lot of work put into attracting new members - and lots of developments to keep them.

> Free range balls and no need to collect
> 3 bay cover on range for all weather practice
> State of the Art Indoor swing studio with full wall screen - and with it we can play courses all around the world :)
> New 3 player hi tech revetted face practice bunker
> coming soon - 3 or 4 hole 'course' for juniors and academy members to be built on our practice ground

a few places up here have a waiting list;

longest was Inverness,7 years maybe still is. The best course in Inverness def, but a few better courses only a 30 min drive away.

Nairn, has had a 2 year wait for the last 10 years, still is.

Royal Dornoch, don't have a waiting list as such, but you have to be a member of the Struie course for at least 2 years be for you are eligible for the championship, so as good as

Sounds like a lovely course, is it in Scotland? Seems very cheap for facilities.

We are currently going through renewals - before that we had about 30 on the waiting list , we are expecting to still have 20 when it's all sorted

A few clubs in the clubs in the area have places available - don't think they are struggling as such
 
We aren't full but are doing ok at attracting new members at the moment. I guess it'll depend on what happens when we get the renewal envelope in the next few weeks and see how much it's gone up by and what that does to membership. If it goes up too much I can see a few walking
