Hi everyone. New to the forum (and to the game really), and was after some words of wisdom!

I've just bought myself a new set of clubs, and was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of the brand...

As a relative novice - (i've played a few rounds in the past, but never with great success and never for any great period of time). For this reason, i didn't want to spend too much, but by the same token wanted to buy something that might last a while. So i decided to spend £200 on a set of Forgan Series 2 Premium Hybrids. The set has standard irons, but a couple of hybrids (which i've never used) so was interested in opinions.

Anybody know of the manufacturer, or have an opinion on hybrids (and whether a novice will find them useful or painful!)

Any information gratefully recieved. Cheers in advance, i look forward to sticking around.

Welcome tee-boy!
I don't know anything about the clubs you bought, but when I started playing golf I bought a starter set by RAM. They were fairly cheap and cheerful to be honest but they were all I needed to get into the game.
If your set is anything like mine, you'll find that the irons aren't that bad and the hybrids will be relatively easy to hit (they replace the long irons, which are difficult to hit). My starter set was good enough to get my handicap down from 28 to 23.
However, as you progress and your ball striking improves you'll notice the benefit of better clubs, particularly the hydbrids and woods.

Thats £100 more than i spent on my first set, i was the proud owner of a full set of brand new Howson Hunters, driver, 3 & 5 woods and 3-SW and i paid £99 for them!!

As golf_bug has said, they'll get you off to a good start and if you do get bitten by the bug proper you'll soon start wondering if a better set will be more suitable for you.

I havent heard of that brand either i'm afraid but i'm sure they'll be fine for your needs....for now ;)

I'm sure they will do to start with but if you do like the game, you'll find that other sets may help you progress. They don't have to be expensive. MD golf do some very competitively priced irons and they are good quality.

Go out and enjoy yourself this summer and if you fancy getting a better set wait until the winter. Not only will the 09 models start to come down in price (certainly after christmas) but the winter will let you get use to them (and maybe get a few lessons to cure any swing faults) and groove your game.

I have heard of the brand, though I don't have any of their clubs. A friend of mine (plays off 9) has one or two of their clubs among his many and varied collection.

I think at one time they sold separates, heads, shafts etc and he'd try out various combinations. I tried the driver but 8.5 stiff was a bit much for me.

Hiya Teeboy

Forgan Have aligned themselves over the last 12 months with Woosie

http://www.forgan.co.uk/

They are certainly playing on this & their St Andrews heritage.

Thing is even though they've gotten a prolific winner on the Seniors tour in their stable, they don't seem by the looks of what's in the online catalogue to be producing what I'd expect of a club manufacturer trying to improve its image & status in the public eye. Infact to me so far the only thing that looks like being real quality is the Tour Bag which looks the DB's.

I could be wrong & would love to be proved wrong as you do quote the series 2 irons of yours are also called premium & there is nothing on the online catalogue listed as premium.

It would be interesting to see what Woosie is using out of the Forgan range & try his clubs for myself. For curiosities sake if nothing else.

If I were to recommend something currently for someone starting Out I'd be suggesting MD or MacGregor as a good starting point.

As for the hybrids in your set, again I've not seen the ones you have assuming they are going to be different than the online ones. Hybrids are there for people who struggle to hit the longer irons like the 3 & 4 iron in a set. I think in this day & age replacing the 3 iron is for most of us a good idea, though not sure that is as easy a desision for the 4 iron.

Tee-boy best of luck with the golf & stick with it & have fun.
