Close to the edge.....help!

....but rather than let this fester away with you, why dont you take it as a personal challenge to step up and play to it ?
Might be better than resigning yourself to being a lesser golfer and having a year of frustration ?

Yes, absolutely. Trouble is I accepted 12 as my "challenge" and every time I played poorly, I never got my 0.1s, because of the fact that Sundays are non-qualifying. So, I play "only" for myself, i.e. to play to 9 or better off the forward tees.....(12 over yellow SSS = 9 over par).

I'm not that fussed about one stoke, sure, but in principle, If I cannot get 0.1s off yellows, I don't see how the h'cap secretary can then CUT me off yellows?

Anyway, I've decided to let it be, EXCEPT that I'm going to keep a copy of all my cards until this time next year. If I have 40-50 cards all between 10-20(?) over the yellow SSS then that will be (hopefully) evidence to not let this happen again. 9 over par (80) is 12 over yellow SSS....this is the best I've done in 18 months.....I've had 3 79s off winter tees....

My scores off whites (very few) have been in the buffer on all but one occasion.....

So, off winter tees I've had (*best*) 79s SSS 67 (that's 12)
off yellows I've had (*best*) 80s SSS 68 (that's 12 too)
off whites I've had (*best*) 84 SSS 70 (that's 14 :D)

Go figure, I say.... :D

BUT, in their defence, I have loads of rounds way over the buffer.

So if you have always been IN the buffer, you're playing a lot more consistently than me

is the aim of the game not to get better and therefore get a lower handicap??? I'd be over the moon to achieve a lower handicap...

or am i missing something here?

I totally agree. It seems that more people are interested in going up so that they can win than actually improving so they can win.

Handicaps should be harder to play to and actually reflect what they are supposed to i.e your best level of play.

All strokeplay/stableford rounds should be eligible for handicap purposes.

But that is the point of this whole thread. The handicap is harder than daves. Best level of play.

You are right the idea is to get lower and be as good as you can be. But not unfairly, what's the point? If someone put me off 9 I wouldn't be happy. Sure I'd be single figures on paper, it wouldn't make me a good golfer. That's gotto be earned and proved on the course.

I thought I would follow this up just to let anyone who's interested in the story.....

I played off whites (stableford) today, and returned a score that will see me back on 11.5 playing 12. I played comfortably and sensibly on 14 holes, lost it badly on 4.

3 out of the 4 bad holes are easy for me off the mats and really hard of whites...

So, there we go, 6 hours and £3 later, I've proved that cutting players off winter mats isn't really satisfactory....the white tees tell the truth, even if the truth hurts a bit.....
