I bought these last week, graphite, senior shafts. I've never been great with my irons and seeing a pp transform his game using these, I wanted to give them a go. I tried a few shots with his, that was enough. Today was my first round with them.

For anyone not familiar with them, they are meant to be a cross between an iron and a hybrid, an iron hybrid you might say 😵‍💫. If you want thin blades, these are not for you. At the same time, they aren't full hybrids. The design is clever, they don't look overly chunky when you look down on them. Certainly no more than my previous Ping G25's.

The first thing is, they are sooooo forgiving. A bad hit is still okay. A really bad hit is still a really bad hit, but a bad hit is not a disaster. Phew. The thing is though, the face must have multiple sweet spots because I hit more sweet strikes than I have in a very long time. I could kid myself that I'm suddenly a great iron player, but I'm not that deluded 😄. The club helps off centre strikes.

When you hit it well, whooooaaa. It goes high, really high, and does it quickly. Then it lands softly, it's a thing of wonder. The noise is satisfying, as is the feel off the club face. The trajectory 😍. Does it give extra distance? Probably a little extra but not crazy amounts. I think we also know that may be sleight of hand with the lofts.

With these clubs, and the senior shafts, the trick seems to be to hit them slowly and smoothly, isn't it always? The easier I hit them, the better they went. The trick is to do that through the whole range.

It's a work in progress but initial results are hugely positive. These irons are designed to make the game more enjoyable. Based on the number of times I had an inane grin on my face today, they are definitely doing that. Highly recommended, well worth checking out

@Red devil you were interested in how I found these. So far, big 👍

Glad you're getting on with them. Another friend (you know him), recently a low single figure player, swears by them for seniors. I've tried them and they do seem easy to hit. Senior shafts are certainly the way to go for anyone lower than 85mph with the driver. And you're right, the extra height does help, especially in the winter with no run on the ball.

Thank you for your review. I might take a long hard look at these.

They're really upright in standard lie angle.
Did you have to flatten them?

Looks like a very useful design for recreational players --not bad at all for mid handicap players--
but I don't think that I'll ever get used to those modern strong lofts.
They make the resulting set configuration very untraditional.

Still, I have to realize that nobody who's taken up golf in the past forty or so years has played with lofts
as weak as what I still think of as normal.

My first Wilson Staff set, handed down to me by my uncle, had
a 20° 2-iron,
a 24º 3-iron,
a 28º 4-iron,
a 32º 5-iron,
a 36° 6-iron,
a 40° 7-iron,
a 44° 8-iron,
a 48° 9-iron,
and a 52º pitching wedge.

I guess one has to be almost dead like me to have played with lofts like that.

@Ye Olde Boomer I haven't done anything with the loft and lie. I'm just hitting them as they come.

Set configuration isn't really an issue. The PW loft is 44⁰ apparently and I have a 50⁰ wedge already. That's fine.

Incidentally, I've just checked the loft chart on my previous irons, Ping G25, and the PW was 45°. 1° difference, not a big deal at my level.

They are a fairly standard range of lofts for a 3-SW set of 9 irons, which have been around for several decades. I would have no problem playing with them, I'm sure.
They have merely mis-numbered by 1 and then had to invent an imaginary wedge name.

Very odd-looking things. I imagine the 5 and 6 irons are great, but I can't imagine reaching for my 9 iron and seeing that chunky monkey on the end of a stick. Looks like a soup ladle. 😄

Make sure to update us in six months time so we can see if your handicap has lowered while using these. (y)

I hit some full 9 iron and PW and they were great, no problem. I did fluff 2 little chips around the green with my PW where I didn't quite trust the club on a bump and run. No question it was the size of the club that was messing with my head. It will be interesting to see how that develops over time. It's a shot I use, I need to be comfortable with it.

In terms of handicap, hopefully I will come down a shot or two but if I don't I am okay if they continue to make me smile. Hitting sweet strikes that fly high makes me happy. Ideally they will bring lower scores as well but if not, they will still be doing their job. If you are playing off 17-18 and all you care about is your score and h/c then you are setting yourself up for an awful lot of miserable days 😂

Granted, yeah, I'm just interested to see if there is improvement in scoring. If you are striking them better and straighter than the old irons then you would expect so. 🙂

Did you buy them brand new? And how many irons did you get?
I bought them second hand from GC4C. They had 15% off stuff for a week or two so my timing was good. £243 was the final price.

The set was 5-PW. A few I've seen are 6-PW and to be honest, that would have been fine with me. These were in good condition, grips are excellent and they had the right shafts so getting an extra club that may or not make the cut each round was not an issue.

Thanks for the review! Cleveland stuff seems designed to help the mid handicap golfer to just enjoy the game more. I am currently really enjoying their smart sole wedges, and the much older mashie fairway and hybrid clubs. Happy days!

My take on these irons is.
They are extremely easy to hit
With a half decent swing, they are very consistent
They go extremely high
They are about a club shorter distance with than a normal set of irons
They are primarily aimed at the 18+ h/c golfer
If you play on a windy links course, they would be hard work
Not for everyone, but they have their place.

And one more point worth mentioning would be price and value for money.

I think I would be very happy with the distance achieved from each iron compared with my "normal" set.

But that hardly matters when you choose a whole set. No need to compare with another set really.
How far do you hit the longest one and how far the shortest one and the gaps in between - that is the consideration.
