I had recently been playing with my uncle and a couple of very good customers of his. One of these guys is a really good golfer and plays of scratch. Pretty decent guys , or so I thought. Every time he hit his ball into the rough or trees he would walk straight up to it therefore I started to take a bit of an interest on exactly where his ball was going. On the very next hole he wasnt even in that bad a place but i seen him take a ball from his pocket and set it down in a good place and pretend he was picking grass from it. I have been keeping an eye on him and it turns out hes a serial cheater. He does this at least 5-10 times in a round of golf. I couldnt believe it.
Now he wants to join our club but theres no way I will sign his card but I am also in a sticky situation as he is an unbelievably good customer of my uncles.

I hate cheats, don't care who they are. He MUST be reported before he joins your club.
Is there any way of reporting him anonymously to the membership comittee?
Fore warn them so that they can make their own minds up.
I hope it works out for you wolfie, it must be driving you mad.

Slime.

If he is cheating 5-10 times a round like you say then this is why he is off scratch;) If he played properly and took 3 off the tee or having to chip out sideways all the time instead of giving himself a nice lie and a shot to the Green no doubt. The shots will soon add up and watch his handicap rise. Say nowt if he joins the club then it will soon become common knowledge to many

something along the lines of

"you'll have to show me how you find your ball so easily in the rough as i struggle to find mine old boy"
or
"you found that quickly....CHEATER(cunningly disguised as a cough"

He'd also have to play with other club members who would say something to the committee and are not associated with you or your uncle.

He already is a member of another club so surely if it was that obvious he would have been caught by now. I really dont know how he gets away with it or maybe its because he is a very wealthy man and everyone is scared to say anything like me. I def would have said something the very first time if he wasnt who he is. I find myself making excuses now so I dont have to go out with him

I actually have tried to make a joke of it but he just laughs it off and its so obvious that he is playing with a different ball every few holes.

You play a Slazenger 1 don't you, Mr Goldfinger?

If he joins your club, he be playing with other members and won't be able to get away with it. We had a guy years ago who would play every comp with two old boys in their 70's. He was pretty young and everyone thought it was strange. Turnes out he would bash it miles but not always straight but because the two old boys would take a few shots and a bit of time to get to where his shot was it gave him time to "find" it and always had a shot.

He got caught by the captain who followed him round from a distance and watched it happen. Rather than say anything he put him in a club match against other players off a similar single figure handicap. He couldn't cheat and I think he struggled to break 100. The captain told him why he had been picked, that he'd been rumbled and banned him from playing with the two old boys. Funny enough he disappeared soon after

But I dont understand how he has got away with it for so long at his current club.

Tough one, especially as he's a friend of the family... Sign his application then have a word with the Secretary and explain your predicament. The club can then say no, and you won't have caused any problems in the family.

If you do sign him in, and he cheats and is caught people might associate him with you coz you proposed/seconded him. You might be perceived as letting the club down by supporting his application.

good call

Don't care who or what he is. Report him. It is your duty, if you don't you are no better than him. Had a similar think at a club I use to be at along time ago. Sat comp. This youngish lad had his dad caddieing for him. Anyway he knocks his ball into the rough. We all set of to look for it. The next thing two of us see is his dad. Drop a ball in the first cut, shouting found it. We went and had a word with the lad . Saying what we had seen and that if he plays that ball he will be reported for cheating.
He used a few choice words and played it. So I did not finish to mark his card or sign it. Reported him at the end of the round, with my witness. Don't know what happened to him. But we never saw him or his dad again.

Its going to be very hard to report him before he has joined your club and if its a social round not much you can really do as its up to him I suppose how he plays. How ever if hes in a comp try and avoid him or if hes playing to submit a card just follow him to where he is and see what he does, if he asks just say I am intrigued how you play out of this and I want to learn.

Hes obviously a bloke who lives off of stature alone and being seen as the scratch golfer must do his ego so much. Obviously a bit hard as hes your uncles friend but maybe mention it to him instead.

I would suspect it's fairly easy if you're on one side of the fairway and in the rough and everyone else is on the other side.......
He probably only does it in a situation like that to make it more tricky to get caught.

But what's the point...?

Tricky call - maybe have a word with your Uncle and see just how good a customer he is.
Then, as said, a quick word in Private with the Sec. and let them make the call.
