cheating mates?

Had a mate who didn't putt out in a comp from 1 inch, I told him that he had until the next tee to replace the ball and putt out with a 1 shot penalty otherwise I'd get him DQ'd,...

which I did.

Splash - i never play with him in comps, i only see the aftermath on the scoreboard after!

Macster- he has followed his dad around from club to club and the same things seem to occur. Its not this club. He doesnt adjust the score i just dont think he gives the +0.1 to him. I shudnt speculate its not fair tho

Justone - tis only fair, he made a schoolboy error

Alex - i know its not directly effecting me and at the end of the day it is only a game so i think this is why i let him off. All in all i am the better golfer and he can continue to cheat himself.

t is incredible how counting is still a difficult task wen it comes to this game.

I wouldn't play with him in competition as I wouldn't be prepared to sign a card of his.

Friendly games for no money? Well, if he wants to delude himself then that's up to him.

When i was running a society it was brought to my attnetion that one of my best mates didnt know any rules of golf,

Summer or winter - it was always winter rules

All grass counted as cut grass, afterall they cut the rough

He would often spray one miles right yet soomehow hit the green one above of regulation, or he would hit a titleist off the tee and putt out with a srixon etc

2 club length drops were more like 40 foot

and so on... but no-one in my society would question him so it went on.

I said to a couple of people if they was 100% sure i needed them to question it, and knowing what he was like i would support them, but it never happened. I lost one of the events to him on count back knwoing dam well he cheated every other game we have played together but as i wasnt in he's group i was screwed.

I still think drops are by far the biggest misunderstanding/lack of knowledge points out there.
One I had to think about the other night was on Sunday at the DDC, one of the guys dumped it into the water on 18 then got a drop round directly in front of the green on the fairway. Anyone else see that one?

Why do people sign his card? Surely one of his playing partners in comps must pull him up?

1. I dont know, we play with a lot of older people in comps, i mean older people so i presume they arnt observant or just trustworthy?

2. He actually shoots SHIITT in comps but never goes up! i mean our club champ he shot 82, 84 but i never see the +0.1's! this is what im trying to say, i dnt know how he stays low

The last comp i played with him in, i was injured so i caddied for him. He shot 83, 11 over par which is terrible! he played terrible aswel. He proceeded to tell me in the car on teh way home that he only shot 80! i was like WTF i watched ur round, u shot more why are u lieing to me!!!! god dam it!! I hope that he didnt put in a card for 80 otherwise that wud really annoy me and its always something ive thought about to this day.

I think you need to be brutal. Tot the score up on each hole and go through each shot with him. Tell him if he gives himself anything you'll claim the hole (if you're having a match) or penalise and D/Q him if he doesn't hole out in a stroke game.

Does your club have HDID and can you see what his handicap progress is on there. If he is clearly missing buffer zones and not going up I'd raise it with the club. To be honest I think he's a cheat and nothing more and I wouldn't have anything to do with him. I wouldn't be overly fussed about playing socially with him either as it isn't a fair game.

I wrote on here about a 4 handicapper I knew who played with two 70+ year olds in comps. He'd spray it all over the place but never seemed to lose a ball and by the time they got to his ball he had a great lie and a miracle escape route. He got caught out in the end.

Your not painting a great picture of integrity at your club and I would be having some serious words with your handicap secretary and seeing about getting random draws.

I read Dave Peltz putting bible (ok I'm a boring old fart) and if I remember, between snoozes, the PGA tour guys (America I think) make only about 48% of putts from 6 foot. Thats with their ability on superfast and manicured greens. Your mate would, by that standard, miss about 65% of those gimmee putts he picks up.

Need I add more??

Has anyone else at your club raised this?

You're a more tolerant bloke than me. I'd have told him to sort himself out or feck right off. I assume this isn't a kid we're talking about!?

Can't belive a) this tit behaves like that and b) appears to get away with it.

no we arnt kids. I dont know how its got like this tbh. I often wonder if anyone wonders why hes so low but ive herd no talking about it

I'd get a click scorer, and when he asks what the noise is after he has played each shot, just let him have it both barrels. Tell him that you'll keep track of the scores for him as well as him keeping the score, because you and several others at the club are aware of his dyslexia with numbers.
Tell him that over how ever long its been he loses the odd shot per hole, then at the end of the round compare. Also let him know that as it stands he is not really treating you as a mate, more like a dope.

I'd also ask to go in a comp with him, score his card accurately, and see if he is willing to be disqualified for signing an incorrect card. At least if you're in a comp with him, you can say to the others in the group to be aware of him scoring himself up on many holes. Word will get around quick enough to save you palying with him much longer.

I'm crap and need every shot, but I'd never cheat. Tell him or he'll just keep doing it.

I hear Jeremy Kyle is having a show dedicated to cheating golfers, tell him you're nominating him. hahaha

I read that too. Couldn't believe it at first but then again there are a few hundred players at tournaments and we only tend to see the top 20 on the telly who tend to be decent putters.

I might be reading this thread wrong but, you keep mentioning that you don't know why people think he is a good player and that they are "bumming him up".

Is this what is bothering you or is it the "cheating"??

If he's giving himself 6 footers in a friendly knock up game then it doesn't really matter does it?? Unless you're playing for cash/ beer/ lunch. I'll regularly knock my partner's ball back from about 4' if we are just out for a knock and a natter.

If his dad is fiddling his scores that is a very serious matter. It's a very serious allegation so you'd need to be 110% sure before you mention something like that.

Robobum, Does your mate mind you knocking his ball back from 4ft,because i remember someone saying that they find it annoying people do this as they dont get to hole those crucial 3,4 5 footers,i agree mind, if your just out for a casual knock dont see the harm in gimmies....

Time and a place really. Comfortable enough with each to say "leave that, I wanna knock it in" if needed.

When we are just having a casual knock we'll often move the ball to another spot and have another putt or 2 if no-one is being held up anyway.

What I don't get is how other people can't see that somethings wrong if he's slapping it about to my h'cap level. If someone is a good golfer and playing well you generally hear about it after the round, you also normally hear about it if a low h'capper shoots in the 80s so something isn't right.

The bottom line is he's a cheat, pure and simple. If your club uses a computer and he isn't going up then he isn't the only cheat and I'm not sure I'd want to be a part of that. Being in Cat1 his score carries more weight in the CSS calculation so it could very well be that everyone's handicaps are at somepoint adjusted incorrectly. This is a serious issue and needs to be sorted.
