CHAMPIONSHIP golf courses ???

TOMO21 is a lucky b*****. Where do you play? Do you get to knock it round Muirfield? You're spoilt for courses up there but the crappy weather must be the drawback.

Shaker, I play Royal Musselburgh, one of the oldest clubs in the world. It's a parkland par 70 course, a fair test with many doglegs, tree lined and rolling fairways with super greens. Never played Muirfield, it's way too costly, but I've played most of the others. The weather's not too bad.....mm, well.
Tomo
I may be wrong but wasn't your course the venue for the very first Open. I'm not suggesting that you were playing, of course. :D

Shanker,

If Tomo's from Musselburgh he'll be away out fighting with the police down at the ice cream shop at this time of night. ;)

It was Prestwick for the first 12 Opens.

Then a wee rota between them, St Andrews and Musselburgh (the Old Golf Course formerly used by Tomo's club) until 1892 when Muirfield hosted. They, the Honourable Company, formerly played out of the Old Golf Course at Musselburgh, too, before it got too crowded. Now a 9 holer within the race course. Still the oldest playing course in the world.

All most confusing with much swapping of courses in those days.

Played Muirfield a couple of years ago. Booked it for my dads 60th birthday. Played at the end of March on winter rates, think it was £75 each. There were no winter tees or greens. Not sure what the winter rates are now but i thought it was well worth it.

If booked a course that said it was a championship course i would be expecting something a bit better than your average course at the very least.

A therin lies at least one servicable definition does it not? of course this remains entirely arbitrary which is why were all stumbling over it.

FWIW I think the term should at least implicitly suggest a course that is build to either PGA or USPGA championship standards in terms of drainage, length, grass type etc. and been used for such within a reasonable period of time- say 7 years?

We would have no doubts in our minds that The Old course at St. Andrews would qualify while lesser popularly known ones might not.

It's certainly an interesting question
