There were a lot of British golfers at the Atlantic Coast Challenge last week (an amateur event that plays over Carne, Enniscrone and Rosses Point, for an entry fee of £100), in Ireland's north west, so here are some photographs of Carne's original Hackett 18 and the new Kilmore 9 - most of which were taken just before or during the event.

Hard to believe the new holes were built for £160,000 and only opened last year.

Hackett 18 photos
Kilmore 9 photos

Great photos Kevin.

Carne is on my list of must plays and had hoped to get down this year but not looking likely now so definitely 2015.

How is that Atlantic Coast Challenge to play in? Is it like a lot of these comps and 5-6 hour rounds as quite fancy it but not if it anything like some of the multi course/day comps.

Played Carne a few years back and loved it, been thinking about playing in the Atlantic Coast Challenge and would be interested to hear what it is like to play in.

The Atlantic Coast Challenge suffers the way any amateur tournament does - slow golfers. Yes, 5+ hours are pretty much the norm (this year it was 5 hours at Rosses, and 5.5 at Enniscrone), but once you accept that's what is going to happen, it's easy. You get time to chat and relax... and apart from impinging on drinking time, it's not like there's anywhere else you have to be. And the atmosphere in the regular hotels/drinking holes is always good.

There are those who take the competition quite seriously and want to win prizes (worth €4,500 next year and not a crystal vase in sight) but for most of us it's about hanging out with friends and playing three hugely under-appreciated but brilliant links golf courses.

A review from last year

Looks fantastic Kevin i used to play in another tournament in Ireland and i was 6hrs round one course and 5 1/2 around the others, when we plays dour practise round we were just under 4 hrs for a 4 ball. Thats what put me of playing in it this year.

Some great value to be had in Donegal and down that coast on class courses
