When hid taxed the car online on the goverments site there was a button that couldn't be un clicked from vehicleinformation, carried on and taxed the car

Last month when we got our credit card statement we didn't notice 50p was taken
,this month £5.95 was taken, don't know how it is done but since found out others have had the same experience and vehicleinformation is a Australian site.

Not much to loose but they would have kept taking it if we didn't notice and informed credit card company to block it.

There is a lot of these scams, driving licences, passports.

I don't see that button option when taxing through the Gov.uk site.

I know there are a few look a like scam sites though.

Never had it for car tax, but had similar when applying for ESTAs for the USA & the Canadian version. Fortunately not been caught out by them yet.

Wife told me it was so probably wrong site ?

HID got caught out a couple of years ago with TV licence and nearly again with driving licence.

Same thing with the EHIC cards, the ones that let you claim free medical treatment in Europe

Basically for everything you can do online at the genuine website for free, there will be a few lookalike sites that will charge for providing the same service.

So always use the correct site and if it has “AD” by the side of your search results, it’s an advert, so scroll down till you see the genuine site

Only use the site if it STARTS with GOV.UK not if it simply contains the letters somewhere.

Safest way is to go to WWW.GOV.UK and use the search to find the service you want.

If you search on Google, advertised sites often appear above the genuine sites. The advertised sites often make themselves look official, they do the work but charge a premium. Navigate to the official sites, they don't charge any premiums. EHIC used to have a lot of non official options, not so bad now, but ESTA is still plagued by this. The Americans don't help either, just go on to the US government website and try to find the link to apply. Google throws this one up https://www.official-esta.com/ which looks all very official, and charges up to $81 dollars for the ESTA, which can be applied for on the real site for $14.

You just need to be careful, and check the small print.
