Hi all,
hope you all well and I know it's a bit late but happy new year to you all.

I'm abit lost when it comes to cars so would appreicate some advice.

I am need of another car fairly desperately, my scenic has almost given up (taking it day to day at the mo!) and I need a car for work (I work out in the community, rural area)

I am torn between 2 cars,
a vauxhall Zafira 2L DTi 54 75000m and a Renault Scenic grand 2L 55 31000 but petrol.

I would prefer a diesel due to the miles I cover but is the low miles of the Renault worth the sacrifice to petrol.
They are both priced to within a couple of hundred £'s of each other.

Sorry if this is a no brainer but hubby has left the decision to me :)

well it solely depends on what you are looking for,if it were a economical car then i'd go for the diesel.you will get roughly 10 more miles to the gallon, the diesel is slightly slower on performance but thats not what you want it for,it has plenty punch though with a torquey engine and would be spot on for 4th and 5th gear overtakes......effortless on the motorway.

i wouldn't be put off by the mileage as it should do for many more so long as it's got a full service history, and possibly a timing belt change.i'd make sure of these things but if they come back as being sound then i'd go for the diesel because of the better mpg.they both are group 17 insurance i think.

good luck with whatever you buy :)

Thanks for the replys.
I have just found out the Zafira was a Cat c damaged now repaired, apparently only 2 n/s doors needed to be replaced, this has now been done, it has 11 mth MOT and vic cert present.
Would this influence your decision?
I have never had experience of Cat c or otherwise so not sure what to do now? thoughts would be appreicated.

Pfft try a V8 rangey then come back to me.

I concede.

If there car is sound then ok, but I you must have a full check by the AA/RAC etc., so it wouldn't necessarily influence the decision, but would definately influence the negotiation.

Ideally, I'd be looking elsewhere.

I personally wouldn't touch a Cat C (cat d maybe), I would beleive that the damage would have been more extensive than just a couple of door panels. Get some pre accident photos and make a decision if possible.

Id go elsewhere if it was a cat C, there will be loads to choose from if you shop around , diesel and not french and you wont go far wrong

Definitely don't touch the Cat C. My lad did and even though it had been put together by a trained tech it still wasn't brilliant. When he came to sell it he really struggled and ended up taking a serious hit on the price.

Also, do the calculations of miles per gallon 'v' cost per gallon of diesel 'v' petrol. And diesels usually have closer service intervals. Depending on the car, its sometimes cheaper to buy the petrol version.

How about a Mondeo?

Sorry but I've had a few mondeos in the past and they have given me nothing but trouble.
I need a car with lots of space as have a good size family but also can carry alot of equipment for work. We also like the high driving position, hubby has back trouble and it helps not having to climb out of a car :)

As a qualified mechanic with 35 years of experience I would strongly advise you to not touch a French car with a bargepole.

As for the Cat C. I wouldn't buy that either.

In order of preference for build quality & reliabillity my list would be.
1.Toyota
2.Nissan
3.VW
4.Audi
5.BMW
6.Ford
7.Vauxhall

Utter tosh!
My dad has a E61 beemer, over the last year and a half he's spent nearly £3k on parts that have gone wrong.
My Clio RS is my daily hack and its not put a foot wrong in 10k miles and 10 months.

To the OP, what sort of mileage per year are you looking at? 15k miles is a break point for buying a derv burner.
I'd personally recommend something from the blue oval family.

Check the number of mechanics that have french cars. (I used to work for two Peugeot dealers and a Citroen dealer) and very few have french cars.

Our family must have had over a couple of dozen Citroens in the last 10-20 years.
As far as I can remember we've not had any real major issues other than routine servicing.
I'm on my 6th C3 as a training car. Never had any issues at all and my cars get a real hammering from learners.
Many of my colleagues have Fiesta, Focus or Corsa and they're always going back into the garage.
As an experienced Citroen owner of 15 years I'd buy another and another and another.
