Captains' Away Weekend - courses needed please

Just a warning about Foxhills. Played there in April and the greens were the worst I have played on for years. Might be better now of course, but be warned !
Cheers, Rich, I'll keep an eye out and be sure to ask them if booking.

Hadn't realised just how many people are partaking.

You would have to also ensure that the selected club was prepared to give up a sizeable amount of it Saturday for 'visitors'. That's 8 or 9 tee times, so you might not be particularly popular with members! I wouldn't have thought Friday would be a problem though.

ESN didn't seem to be have a problem when we went, in a smaller group, a while ago. They simplyswapped the 'Member's Course' for the day.

Dale Hill could be worth considering too. Woosnam course meant to be really good; Played the Original a few times in the 90s and can remember it as reasonably good.

How about Old Thorns near Liphook?
A lot of people rave about it, I don't particularly like it, but that's because I always play like a tosser around there.
It must be good....they hold a qualifier for the Trilby Tour there.:ooo:

We had our Centenary dinner there two weeks ago. 230 of us and plenty of room. Good facilities and and ok course when it's dry.

2 nights dinner, bed & breakfast and evening meal with 3 rounds of golf around Old Thorns lobbed in for £189.00 (high season).
They also offer the same break with 2 rounds of golf around Old Thorns and a round at Blackmoor (which is just up the road) for an extra £20.00 or so, (a lot cheaper than the normal green fee at Blackmoor....they must be desperate!).
;)

That's pretty damn good! Cheers, Rob! I'll contact them on Monday.

Any other 18 holers with hotels, then? Foxholer, what would you recommend?

The Oxfordshire (same owners as Dale Hill and Chart Hills) went down very well last year with most of the same crew that went to ESN. They are going to Foxhills this year!

That deal at Old Thorns sounds pretty good though. Remember that it's not £20 for the round at Blackmoor though - it's £20 extra, but probably still worthwhile.

Again, fitting 34 in would seem the largest issue I'm sure clubs will be keen, maybe not the members though!

I'll take a look at The Oxfordshire too, then. Cheers, all!

I'm assuming that everyone going has a handicap certificate? I booked a groupon deal at the Oxfordshire last year with my other half and they wouldn't let her play as she hasn't got a formal handicap. Nothing about it in the T&C's on the offer!!

It's on their website though - just below their Dress Code. Did they ask you for yours? Is she a 'competent' golfer?

That would be only the 4th Club out of 150 I've played that have required one.

As it's a 'Captains's' outing, I would presume H'cap certs would indeed be available!

Yes they did, agree it's something that rarely happens. She does hit a decent ball, a lot better than a lot of the ladies at my club who do have handicaps

Cheers for the heads-up, drive4show. We'd be okay, as all have handicaps.

Hanbury Manor is another one that I've had suggested. Any good?

Foxhills the place to go....

For the price I think with the facilities and restaurant etc is excellent.

But then seeing as I know nothing about this event, despite being a member, my opinion is not needed ...:D

Given his position, I believe Bratty is still in the 'planning' stage. Once destination resolved, there might ell be some sort of notification!

Foxhills don't help themselves with the weird pricing structure!
