Here's the picture.....For arguments sake!
Your playing in a 2 ball but from the tee shots both balls have landed online with each other 40ft from the flag.......
Your playing partner asks you to hold the flag for him....
But in doing this you get a near perfect read of the putt coming to the hole......

Would this break the rule " you cant stand behind a player to gain an advantage of a line on a putt"

I know that your at the other end and not behind said player but your still able to get a good read for your own putt

nothing wrong with him holding the flag if u have asked for it to be tended!! But if your shot is first and your opponents are after u and u r not feeling confident at the shot i would ask for the flag out so they could have no read of the line!!!

This is just something thats been bugging me.
If we're only a two ball stableford for instance then its ok for the chap your playing with to hold the flag for you even though he gets a good read of the line....

Surely this is similar to that said chap standing directly behind you while your putting getting a read this way also.

There is no difference of ur partner standing a few feet from you while you take your putt, as soon as you hit the ball he walks behind you to get a read........I think thats just the way it is. Tuff titty............As for asking for the flag to be lifted out, so as you wont give him a line is a load of u know what!
It's a game, not a living....well for us anyway!!!!

I think it was the American golfer, Rodgers, at Muirfield,(remember him, the guy that sunk the putt and threw his cap on top of the hole as if he was afraid the ball would jump back out?)anyway his final shot into the 18th was a five iron and for the craic he had his caddy tend the pin!

Not 100% sure but if I was in the position I would tend the pin but stand to the side of the pin I.E. behind and left and watch the ball - then I am not directly on line during the stroke.
But I get advantage of seeing the break at the end.

This is what I do. If a player is coming in on the line I'm then going to putting on, I stand to the side.

If it's a friendly, I'll be crouching down happy gilmore style directly behind the flag watching every last twist and turn! :o

Simple.
If you are off the green at any distance you may have the pin left in or taken out. Why would you want your opponent to attend the flag? What is he to do, take it out if the ball is running a bit too fast at the hole with a good chance it will hop over it when you could be saved by it hitting the pin.
If you need the pin attended on the green it can only be that you can't see the hole well enough to judge the line. Where you want your opponent to stand at the pin is for you to tell him. If he can gain an advantage by attending have the pin removed and take your chances.
If you are playing pairs matchplay always get your partner to attend as it helps him or her to get a read of the green near the hole.

If I want the pin attended then you should attend it if I'm off the green or not. The exercise is good for you.
