I’ve made my feelings about the concept of national pride clear in the past, too.

Yes I don’t think it’s something you will ever understand when people do things for their country and show pride in their country

The armed services are doing a job. I expect them to defend me because they’re paid to do it.

I used to have this opinion, then one day I had a real think about what must actually have gone on back in those days of war, from that moment on my opinion change 100% but as a famous saying goes, I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

I have no lack of respect for the overall actions of the armed forces during the World Wars.

Of course you’d say that because you’re an apologist for the armed forces but if you really think that the actions on that day were correct then I’m happy you think I’m pathetic.

And I say that as someone born into a deeply unionist family.

Is it? Isn’t this a thread about the armed forces and people’s opinions on their actions?

Mentioning what went on, on bloody Sunday is not, IMO, in the same debate as honouring or marking or not as it were, remembrance day.

When you’ve done tours of NI as I have, and you’re against an enemy without a uniform, and you’re walking the streets not knowing where the next petrol bomb, sniper shot or nail bomb may come from as you’re walking with and protecting the RUC foot patrols, then I’ll allow you to debate with me something like NI and any of the situations that occurred over there, because without that personal experience you’ll never understand the tensions and actions that take place when you either come under live fire attack or believe you’re in a life threatening situation from an enemy you can’t identify, because they were all terrorist cowards.

I have no wish to go into the N Ireland debate I also have family affected by what happened over the years in N Ireland and the Uk

So my comment was more about the continual actions of our armed forces to keep the UK and countries of the Commonwealth plus any nations that asks - safe at night from people who wish to cause you and freedom harm.

The world will always be in some sort of danger and people sign up to help defend against that to help keep you safe so you can sit on your smart phone in your own freedom and I hope you appreciate and respect those doing it on a daily basis

Are you suggesting one has to have done a tour of NI during the troubles to have an opinion about Bloody Sunday ?

Guys please let’s not go there in regards Sunday Bloody Sunday

The facts of that day are all out there and it’s not good reading or a debate that ends well
