Callaway Club Advice Needed - XR Steelhead / Apex

Hi all - I need your help and advice

Have attended a number of custom fit sessions for a number of clubs over the past couple of weeks and have got the choice down to two clubs - Callaway XR Steelhead and Apex

Steelhead gives me confidence and the Apex (ironically) gives me better dispersion and length but .....

I forsee myself having the Apex 5 iron in my hands and not the confidence to hit it (even though my pro and the fitters I have visited tell me otherwise)

So do I go for the XR that will serve me a purpose today and probably need changing in under 12 months or do I go for the Apex and start believing I am good enough to hit them as people tell me I am

If it's the Apex CF16 then you don't need to be "good" to hit it...
Why would you need to change the Steelhead in a year..?
In case you missed it, there's a Steelhead Pro coming out...
Steelhead will be cheaper than Apex, feel will be a difference but other performance will be similar..
If price isn't a problem I'd go Apex every day.

Thanks for that - yes I heard the Steelhead Pro is coming but that isnt till March .. have sold my M2's and would rather not be clubless for Feb ..

Unless your high 20's you shouldn't have a problem with CF16..

I used to play a lot pre kids - havent hit a ball for 15 years but am back and have gone from 28 to 18 in six months

Depends what you want for your clubs. I've got the cf16 apex and came to them from ping i20s then Taylormade PSi irons. For me the apex strike the right balance of forgiveness and distance without being too large or shovel like. I would suggest and recommend trying a few different shafts in the Apex head to make sure you get one that suits you and your swing/swing-speed. I did this and, with some advice from on here, decided against the Apex Pro on the basis that they'd be great when I was playing great but I'd lose a lot of forgiveness when I wasn't.

The Apex are great clubs and I wouldn't think you'd be disappointed with them.

I'd go Apex but much prefer the 2014 model.

Why will you have to change irons after 12 months? Are you going to be too good for them?

Andy - that is exactly my fear

Am worried (and hopeful at the same time) that my handicap drops and that I will need to change again from the XR Steelheads

Whereas the Apex CF16 would be a longer term commitment (Jesus - sounds like marriage)

Am honestly frustrated at only being able to configure the perfect 7 iron .. I just wonder if I have the ability to hit the Apex 5 iron or 4 iron which is purely in the mind I know

Ian,

I really don't think you'll have any problems with the Apex 4 and 5 irons. If you have any problems hitting the Apex 4 and 5 then they're the sort of problems that would also affect you being able to hit the steelhead 4 & 5.

You've not mentioned anything about your general iron play or ball striking so I'm assuming you're not a terrible ball striker with your irons? In my opinion, having played the Apex for around half of last season, the Apex irons could cover a range of abilities/handicap golfers. They're not blades and not large head game improver style irons either, but they are impressive as far as I'm concerned. I don't regret buying them and don't reckon you would either.

To explain my last message - I managed to get extended time (around a week in my possession) with fitting cart heads (7 iron) of the CF16 and Apex Pro as well as different shafts. I hit plenty of balls at the range and at the practice area of my club, so that helped me narrow down what I wanted by noting what worked for me.

Ive got the 2014 Apex and love them a cracking set not to big and not to small so you've no confidence in them, in saying that one of my mates got fitted today for the XR steelheads and his yardage gain was at least a club and a half longer

To everyone who has responded thank you so much - you really have been very helpful

Am hitting the Apex 160yds and the XR SH 170yds with the 7 iron but it isnt about 'willy' size and how far I can hit the club - the dispersion with the Apex was unlike anything I have had before - 30 shots hit and the max miss was 7yds either side - I was astounded

Yet I cannot convince myself to make the right decision and choose the Apex over the SH

Really stupid I know

Am using the M2 '16 Hybrid and was thinking whether the Apex or Steelhead Hybrid would be a better option?

Hit it clean and it's unbelievable...
Get it wrong and it's vicious.

All of these irons seem to have similar issues to me.
They are game improvy low loft, forgiving irons that hit ridiculous yardages, that when you want to go to real irons, leave you stranded.
Buy some players irons, with sensible lofts, and you will be fine. Proper gaps between irons, and no need for 5 wedges.

I find that with all hybrids. Really struggling with these and keep trying different ones hoping brand X will be the magic answer but beginning to think it might be me. Surely not
