Someone at our club has questioned the use of a caddy in club events, specifically scratch comps (though i dont suppose the type of comp matters). Not me, by the way as i couldnt care less what help someone gets - they have to hit it still. But - a question none-the-less, three even:

1. Can a player have a caddy at all?
2. Should that caddy pass 'a' club to the player on the tee (no discussion, but the caddy selected the club - from two -after a playing partner had played already from the tee).
3. Can a caddy discuss lines of putts?

I guess that the fundamental question is can the caddy offer advice the same as on the telly? Or in Am events should they only carry and shut up?

I've witnessed all the above on a number of occaisions before but really thought nothing of it - but today there has been a row about it. Any idea's?

Yes, yes and yes. A caddy is part of your "team" he can do anything permitted in the rules. I don't know of any club who don't permit caddies, we certainly do as do the leagues we play matches against other clubs in. It's (admittedly a fairly rare and quaint these days) part of the game.

Absolutely agree, it's not unusal for the single figure guys to enlist other members to caddy for them in the club championship.

Yeah, coz they need all the help they can get...... :(

I'd like a comp where the good players have to caddy for us. Then they'd see how real golf is played...... :o

I got through to the final of a club competition when I was at Crowborough and my mate asked if he could caddy for me. I wanted to clear it with the Secretary first, who said it was OK to have a "bag carrier" and no more. He wasn't allowed to give me advice.

And they'd probably save you 2 or 3 shots per round too. ;)

My mate caddied for me in the scratch knockout final a few years back. He wasnt going to give me advice though as he was 16 h/c and couldnt hit it very far so I was playing different golf to what he was used to. He couldnt club me or read the putts but he did keep my grooves clean and made me laugh :D

The Committee may prohibit or restrict the use of caddies in certain competitions, although that should be specified for each competition rather than be a blanket rule, but if not prohibited, the player may seek and receive advice from his caddie.
