Got home last night to find I had been burgled. Bedroom had been trashed, lost about 2 grands worth of jewellery and lap tops. Still finding out what else has gone. I have looked at the small print in our contents insurance, and guess we won't be covered. It looks like they got in by climbing up the drain pipe, and using the open quarter light in the upstairs bathroom to open the bigger window. Small print says all windows must be secured. Not sure who the bigger thieves are really, the insurers or the burglars. I have never made a claim in 20 years, and now I want to, I can't.

An expensive lesson I guess, close all windows, no matter how small, and hide any expensive stuff some where other than the bedroom.

Soco says he is going to 5 a day at the moment in Watford. Flipping heck, it never occurred to me that it was that common.

Murph,

Sorry to hear about that. The same happened to us when we were living in London, but we were in bed at the time. The broke in just to steal the car keys and knicked the car.

I nearly caught the little scrote as well, but probably best I didn't otherwise I would have probably been doing time...

Sorry to hear about your theft - hope they catch the wee barsteward and you get at least some of your stuff back.

insurance companies are gits...

I had my £1,500 mountain bike stolen a few years back and even though it had been locked up and secured they found a small technicality to get out of coughing up for it.

What we pay our money for, i don't know

A guy 5 doors down from me got burgled the other night, police said there were 13 others that night!! I put an almighty carving knife under the bed for a few nights and was quite prepared to use it if necessary, I have 2 kids and would defend them at all costs from intruders.

If you're sure you won't be able to claim then I reckon the best thing you can do is tidy up asap and forget it ever happened... maybe get some decent window locks fitted and/or a security light.

I agree with Matt, not a nice thing for any one to come home to and you defo have our sympathys [sp?]

Sorry to hear that. Happened to my folks many years ago. I'm rather paranoid about it now so i'm a tad OCD when it comes to making sure that the windows are shut, doors locked and alarm is on.

We had a security light, but they have pulled all the wires out of it. Pity they didn't electrocute themselves.

Mrs Mog seems ok with it, a bit pished at her bling being stolen, but pretty on top of it other wise. Like usual with these things, it was mostly her stuff that got taken.

Oh that sucks donkey balls. Had two in the space of a few months the year before last. The Police are an insult to the term useless and don't get me started on PCSOs...

Unless you already have, it's always worth making a phone call to the insurers. You might not need to bend the truth (much) to get your claim and then at least you've only been robbed by the scum and not your insurers as well.

The burglaries really affected my missus so if Mrs Mog is OK at the moment, all good but keep an eye on her in case she is being brave.

Nothing anyone can say will make it any better for you. Just hope that the scum got the same comeuppance as those two clots in Wales on the quad bike.

Yeah, Moggo was fine. Totally useless at guarding a property, but a dab hand at hiding. The least he could have done was trip them up on the stairs, he does it to me often enough.

I am going to try to claim, but my guess is they won't pay up. Two other guys at the office have been done in the last couple of years, and they haven't been paid out. You wonder what you pay for.

Sounds awful, maybe you should have broken a window and claimed it was the burglars ;)

This probably would have been the way to go? Honesty and integrity seems to count for nothing. It's not like the burglar is going to come forward saying they didn't break the window?

Hopefully your stuff will be recovered.

The Soco seemed to know his stuff, and also his villains MO. The last thing I need is to get caught out and done for fraud. That would really put the cherry on it. And I would still have to pay for the repairs. His view was that contents insurance is a total rip off, and not to bother, as no one ever gets paid out on it. Direct line were the only one he said had a good reputation, and as we are with DL, I hope he is right.

I doubt very much if we will ever see any of our stuff again. Shame, as some of it had been custom made for the Mrs for various special occasions.

Sorry to hear your bad news Murph. Good advice to keep an eye on the good lady, we were robbed, many years ago now, but it took ages before my good lady felt really safe.

Its the things you find missing weeks later that keep bringing it up again. In our case it was a china pig we could put money in, they had taken the bung out emptied the money out and replaced the bung and put it back in the glass cabinet.

There was a piece on Talksport about burglaries earlier today and a lot of the increase in jewellry theft is being put down to these 'We'll buy any gold' sites . No proof needed of ownership , just pop all your old gold in a bag , send it to us and we'll give you cash for it . No names , no blame :(
