After our annual service from BG last week, she allowed one of their chaps to come and measure up for a new boiler
(why, i have absolutely no idea whatsoever)
Anyway, turned up today and quoted £5.5K for a new boiler
I asked the Mrs whether he was offended when she laughed in his face ?

Actually , she did play ablinder by inviting the neighbours young kids round to play noisly with ours' (as well as fed them choccy biscuits to give them lots of energy) and arranged for tescos to deliver.

But stil - £5.5 K????
Apparanetly it's £1.5K for teh boiler and £4K worth of pipes !

I've told her if they get it down to less than £1.5K i'll think about it when the current one breaks

AIBU?

big company big prices, i know someone:thup: who for one of their customers replaced the whole heating system combi boiler 13 radiators and new copper pipe for half BG price to JUST change the boiler!!! really nice bloke so he is and he plays golf:whoo:

If I could charge BG prices I'd only work 6 months a year!

Absolute robbing swines they are and they use loads of sub contractors aswell.

i can fit a glow worm cxi combi and 8 rads for £2650 all new pipe and full warranty, the likes of BG just charge what they like telling people its the best job going and relying on the name you probably get the bloke from down the road fitting it for them as a subby, and probably he is someone you wouldn't let do the job in the first place.

I wouldn't put a gloworm in a dogs kennel never mind a house......

I despise British Gas with a passion. I've had numerous run ins with them over the years.

We had a new boiler (Worcester Bosch) installed in the loft a few years back. My man charged me £2,000 for the whole lot.
The old dear who lives next door to my Mother-in-law was charged £4,000 by British gas for the same boiler and same installation.

I'd avoid British Gas like the plague!

Oh, and one other thing, in order to fit a boiler you need a 'Gas Safe' certificate. My man had one. British Gas employees don't need one because 'British Gas the company' holds one and that covers all of their employees in a sort of umbrella way.

Ask around and get a decent independent gas fitter. British Gas will rip you off.

No.

OK, we need a new boiler. I KNOW the boiler is £1200 and the works plumber (who isn't allowed to do the job) says it's 1 day's work.

That's why we're getting quotes for £4,000. ?!?!

Same thing, don't need to phone the big boys, I know what the quotes will be.

My plumber will do it, when he's free. I know it'll be £1200 + one day labour + odds and ends. I'd say that's £1,800-£2,200 tops.

So why are the quotes £4,000?

The answer ain't rocket science.

Unfortunately there are tradesmen out there that won't think twice to rip you off if they get the chance.

I usually get 3 -4 quotes and go with a middle price for work I want doing and also research a bit so I know a bit of what I want doing.

I've been offered money upfront a few times in the past before I've started the job, some people are just thick.

The cheapest price ain't always the best job.

No, I agree. Better not to mess with things like Boilers (It's Gas, after all).

I just wonder what is a fair price for a day's work these days.

It varies to be honest.

Is yours a straight boiler swap, what boiler do you have now and what boiler do you want??

£1800-£2200 is £600-£1000 for fitting a replacement boiler that will take no more than a day !!! That's still a rip off.

We had a new boiler (Worcester Bosch) installed in the loft a few years back. My man charged me £2,000 for the whole lot..

Mine was £2,400, 6 months ago, (Worcester Bosch Combi) which included all new pipework for gas and water, removal of tank from loft, removal of immersion tank from airing cupboard, removal of a couple of rads that I didn't want, new thermostatic valves on all rads and a few other bits and pieces.

why is it a rip off,all heating jobs have to be done to current building regs, these include thermostats on the rads as well as upgraded controls and a room stat, these are not just add on to bump the price up,plus if it is an old system it should be power flushed prior to being fitted and a cleaner added when filling up that should be drained and refilled a week later,or a magnaflow type filter fitted,it soon adds up doesn't it,and if your not getting this type of job done your not getting it done correctly.or you could just get the local polish cowboy to do it for a couple of hundred!!!!!!!
