Bohemian Rhapsody

Not a huge Queen fan and the mixed reviews have put me off going so I'll wait for netflix or whatever and see it at home. Too many movies get over hyped, here especially if there's a British angle of some kind. Everything from Braveheart to Dunkirk have been overhyped.
Seems Queen's legacy has been overblown/overhyped too since Freddies death. They couldn't break in America and it was Wayne's World use of Bohemian Rhapsody in 91/92 which gained them some late acknowledgement over there. Wasn't until Live Aid in 85 they got that much more notice here but that was just a 20 minute short set and they looked good as come of the other acts on the day were plain awful. They'd been on the go for 15 years by then. A lot of it is very basic rock n roll. A few gems in there of course.

A bit of incorrect facts there especially when it comes to the success of the band and in the US

They had multiple platinum records in the US thoughout the 70’s and 80’s - some going 3x platinum

And in the UK they were pretty big infact massive before Live Aid - Bohemian Rhapsody for example for number for 9 weeks I believe plus countless other top ten and a few further number one singles and countless albums

Live Aid just confirmed how good they were live - I was lucky enough to see them in 86 at Wembley , nothing has ever come close to that concert

They won’t be to everyone’s taste but their success since they arrived in the 70’s was huge all over the world

I don't care if they were big in the US or not. They were stunning live, they had a huge number of hits that still stand up now. Their greatest hits album holds all sorts of records for length of time in the album charts. In Freddie Mercury they had one of the greatest front men ever. Dislike him by all means but his stage presence is undeniable.

Of course bands popularity goes up and down, that is pretty normal for any band that has longevity.

Saw them 3 times with Freddie and they were great, but also enjoyed the initial comeback tours with Paul Rodgers who is in his own right a top rock singer and brought something different to the gigs - plus was already on their level re fame/success.

Having said that i can see why John Deacon took the decision to retire rather than be involved with subsequent "projects" such as the Ben Elton musical and new film etc

From my understanding Queen lost a lot of following in America after the “I want to break free” video where they dressed as women a la Coronation Street.

Their greatest hits album gets a hammering in my car on a regular basis. Saw a documentary on the Beeb a while, including lots of footage on Freddie. He was one very switched on guy.

Buhah
sorry to be slightly off topic.... I heard in recent days that even though Freddie had a huge overbite he never had it "fixed" as he was scared it would ruin his voice....he had an 8 octave range.

Interesting.

Eight? Haha not even close. Maybe half that! The best singers in the world wouldn’t get to eight!

I’m watching the live aid performance on YouTube.. and the movie did it so well! Like almost spot on (without doing the entire 20 min set..)

The casting is fantastic they look like each member of the band.

It’s a truly brilliant movie and a fitting tribute to one of musics greatest ever bands.

Interesting.

If the film was accurate he was born with 4 extra incisors and as a consequence (don't ask me how) he had a 4 octave range.

Remember reading an article a few years back. A bunch of scientists had studied different aspects of Freddie's voice. The conclusions being not only could he cover 4 octaves but his vocal chords responded quicker than just about every singer they'd studied. Apparently a greater range than Pavarotti.

I watched a documentary last night and he was incredible live.... Something I've never really appreciated before.

They mentioned the teeth thing and said a 5 octave range, not sure where the guy I was listening to got his info from about 8.

And could munch through a nosebag of hay quicker than Red Rum 🤗
