Well,

Left the house at 7 this morning to get dropped off down my club for this morning's round. Wasn't teeing off til 8:45, but wanted time to warm up!

One thing I was shocked about was the fact that it was so frosty, but we were playing to the full tim greens.

It was ridiculous. You pitch your approach into the green and it would bounce 25 ft in the air and off the back of the green.

It did thaw out a bit towards the end of the round, but not that much. But I can't imagine how much damage it does to the greens for the summer.

The guy I was playing with used to be a greenkeeper there and they have never closed the course for frost but the greens are always in pretty good quality in the summer. Strange.

As for the round itself, well my driving is better than it's been for a long time. Still the odd slice but for the most part they were either arrow straight or even had a slight draw. Thanks to the TM guys for sorting that out.

Short game was hit and miss and my lag putting was pretty good, but I couldn't seem to sink many from inside 3ft

I was surprised how well I was striking the ball since it was so cold but it actually wasn't too bad!

All in all, not a bad day and my swing changes seem to have started to bed in. Which is nice.

Our greens were the same frozen, and it can be very frustrating, however if we dont take it to seriously it still can be fun.Of course the ball will bounce miles in the air if it hits the green on the full. However thers always someone who thinks he can and get the ball to stop, lol

Our greens are rubbish at the moment. Putting is a complete lottery. To be expexted at this time of year but frustrating all the same

Greens the only bit of our course that are fully playable at the moment, played a match the ohter day and didnt miss once from inside 8ft (either the greens are ok or i got a lucky bounce each time lol)

Greens were beautiful today, they looked so sharp and green.

I had a pretty enjoyable game, I had to stick with the new swing but also wanted to score some points, and I did... 9 points on the front 9 :o :o. Kept my head in it and belief in the swing, 18 points on the back 9... More like it Al!! My putter was on FIRE on the way back.

Fairways are not as wet as they were but they are claggy now, I think wet was better, also pretty windy.

Fun game, and nice to play to my handicap for the back.

Heavy frost in Perth today but a group of us were down playing the Strathtyrum course at St Andrews - couldn't have asked for a better day or course conditions. Excellent value at £12 for the round too....

Will no doubt be back to the frost layered course next week and the 25ft bounces you had today Aztecs.

It is strange though how some say playing on frosty greens does no harm come summer and others are dead against it. I suppose the type of grass / soil will have a part to play in it?

I think the problem is staying on a frozen green, once on I dont mind too much.

My self and another Tain Member played at Fortrose & Rosemarkie this morning full greens and as its part of our reciprical deal only £5. Played ok shot gross 72 (par 68) and the other chap a gross 66. Lovely day just walked straight on to the tee from the car park after not touching a club since last Sat. :D

I was more referring to what people say about the effects on playing on frosty greens does to the grass in the longer term i.e. damaging it and ruining it for when spring comes.

We never play on frozen greens, and there is a good explanation of why on the club website ( i did post it on another thread a while back). Other local courses such as Liphook and Hankley Common never play on temps. All three clubs have great greens in the summer, but personally think our greens reach that condition earlier in the season.
