so after todays round, i speak with a committee member with regards to my submitted cards and process to being given my handicap, so we pop through to the office who i gather is the handicap sec

im told that the club/other members wouldnt be happy to give me a handicap because it would be a 28, the cards i cant remember exactly where 120ish, 110 and 95, but said that if anything i would have tro be given a handicap of 15, and as i play more it would gradually increase

the committee member wasnt very happy, with the conversation and said he would raise it with the committee this coming monday and to vouch i play to the level my handicap would present,

just a little annoyed and upset as i dont think this would be fair to me am i wrong?

any advice you could pass on to me?

I am sure that they are obliged to give a handicap based on the cards submitted. Tell them that you will take the matter up with the R and A if they try and impose a false handicap on you.

They are entitled to look at your cards in the "Annual Review" and make a reasonable change if the evidence suggests that you are playing regularly better than your handicap, but they must have some more cards to do that

Chris

would look good in your sig Richie ;)

sod playing to 15 as a genuine 28 capper, you might get it based on the 95 so if par is 72 then 23 and so on

see what they say 1st

Forcing you to take a 15 handicap when you are playing to 28 is scandalous

Obviously you will improve on that over time and you have made some good improvements already, but they have to accommodate higher handicappers.

If they wont change, then go elsewhere

So whats it got to do with the other club members it's your handicap nothing to do with them.

Just bide your time and let the committee member take it to council where common sence will provile,i hope.

i think its because they have been stung by "bandits" in the past so may be for cautious reasons

i have rung up my next closest course, not played there yet but price compaired to the muni i had earmarked to join is alot better and is a private course, so i may very well go there instead,

£100 for the rest of the year, get my handicap, and can play 7 days aweek without paying to play when i do go

the muni is £70 for the winter leauge and £12 everytime i go to play not including drinks food so £20 on avg everytime i play a round there

feel really put off by what has happened today, blessing in disguise maybe!

It's nothing to do with the R&A - as far as handicapping goes, the club is answerable to the County Union.

The rules for initial handicap award are quite clear - a minimum of 3 cards marked and signed by a responsible person acceptable to the handicap committee. After the adjustment of any high scores down to 2 over par, the handicap should be set based on the lowest of the three cards against SSS. They can allocate a lower handicap if they have reason to consider a lower handicap more appropriate to the player's ability. Looking at the 3 scores quoted, it's difficult to see where a handicap of 15 could come from. The handicap secretary needs to come up with a justification.

Richie,

Your course has a par of 71 so based on what scores you have said on here I would guess you would get a first handicap to be around the 24 mark give or take a couple depending on any high scores on any individual hole on the card you recorded 95.

See what the committee says on Monday night matey and if its lower than expected ask for the reasons why and if still not satisfied and they wont budge on it go elsewhere as there are loads of courses close to you.

Cheers

when i joined my course, I put a 103,95 and 86. The handicap secretary gave me a handicap of 22!!!!!!! I was more like a 17 handicapper but he said he has to go by the computer!!!! Obviously my handicap was questioned by a few members but the secretary vouched for it. after a few months he gave me a voluntary cut to 18.

Right, I'm a bit confused here, going by the title of the thread "bit annoyed at what could be my first club" this looks like a club the OP is about to join ?

So if he is about to join it, how has he got three cards submitted ?

If he is a member, were each of the three cards that were submitted, marked and signed by a member of the club ?

If the cards were properly recorded and duly signed by a member of the club, then the club have nothing to worry about. They should carry out the proper procedure and give an initial allocation based on the best of the cards, duly altered as per the guidelines.

If it was just the OPs mates that signed them... then.... :D

my cards have been signed by members one by a committee member after playing with them for the past few weeks every friday

and yes about to join this coming week as i was told to get the cards signed and handed in, as they knew when i would be paying my fees, so i could then jump strait into the winter leauge

Well if they are willing to cut corners in the process, then incorrect initial handicap allocations are definitely no problem to the committee. ;)

I'd be concerned what else they do off their own back rather than adhere to CONGU policy. ;)

To submit cards for handicap, you must be a member of a club. What kind of outfit are we talking about? Name and shame!

Forget the Muni, get yourself to the other club.
If the Muni's "Handicap Secretary" is doing this then chances are he's not following the rules on other things too.
Best left alone.
