After hearing good things about Bishop Stortford I decided to use this month's freebie Greenfree voucher in GM. Cleared the diary, packed up the car and set off on the 30 minute journey down the A120.

First impression was the clubhouse and the surrounding being absolutely immaculate, I was very impressed and the clubhouse looks awesome, although we didn't venture into the bar for anything as we were a little bit pushed for time. Pro Shop was well stocked and seemed competitively priced on the vast majority of things and even stocked different colour FJ SciFlex gloves which I have been looking for for ages....would have bought some had I not just bought some Srixon gloves online.

Anyway, the course. Pretty decent but not as good as I was hoping for. My pro was trying to organize an away day down there last year which never happened so I was really expecting something brilliant as he was really pushing it, that's not to say it was rubbish though. Good layout generally although lacked any signs between the 2nd green and the 3rd tee which meant we were wondering about like lost souls for 5 minutes trying to work out where to go, consequently slowing down the pace of play a bit for people behind us.

Tee boxes were a bit cut up and looked like they needed some work to get them back to the high standard they obviously once were, some looked excellent, others looked like they had been hacked at by someone trying to play golf with a pneumatic drill. Fairways were excellent and the greens were as smooth as a babies bum and extremely fast, even with the vast amount of rain we had the night before, which there was no sign of at all so the course obviously drains very well.

Some interesting holes but I would say that only one or two of them I'll remember for a long time, the second hole, mainly because I stuck a 9 iron to 2 feet from 140 yards and made birdie, the other being the 14th, a par 4 which only measure's 246 off the yellows, "possibly driveable on a good day" I hear you say? Think again, 5 large bunkers guard the front of the green and the majority of the fairway, you'd be a fool to take on the green, 4 iron and then 56 degree on, couple of putts for par......or so he says. LOL Very quirky little hole that I'm sure can be a massive card wrecker at times and definitely my stand out hole of the round.

18 is a nice finishing hole that plays over a little stream but that really shouldn't come into play at all as your drive will be way short of it and then it's nothing more than a 7/8 iron into the green. Overall I feel that maybe a few holes could be improved with the addition of a bit of water as there is barely any water at all but it's a good course, generally well maintained and should offer up a decent challenge to golfers of all abilities. Well worth using the greenfree voucher on.
