Good grief. Where do I start!?

From my youth.

Echo Beach - Martha & the Muffins
Simple Minds - New Gold Dream ( though anything pre '85 will do)
Talk Talk - It's My Life & Such A Shame
Silent Running - Emotional Warfare
U2 - New Year's Day
Icehouse - Great Southern Land
Inxs - Listen Like Thieves

That'll do for now.

House Of The Rising Sun - The Animals

A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Procal Haram

Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel

Can't quite say that they make my toenails curl now but...

Saw The Animals live in Croydon at the ABC cinema about a week or so before House of The Rising Sun was released and they performed it live , initially on acoustics with Eric walking from behind us down the aisle towards the stage singing without amplification. Toenails? No. Hair on the back of the neck. 100%.

Whiter Shade of Pale. I was in the same form as Mathew (Maff) Fisher (the organist on the track and co-writer (allegedly)) at school and played bass for a while in his group. Brilliant musician.

Bridge Over Troubled Water. When Capital Radio started up in 1973, this was the first track they played. I don't think that they had many LP's at the time as tracks from that album were played ad nausium (sp).

Sounds like you were one of the original roadies Roger!
The Animals and Procal Haram singles are two that really stand out from my youth and never tire of hearing them. And there are many many more.

Oh, and you never told us yours Roger :D :D :D

Dunno about 'never tire of hearing them' or whatever.

But basically, my life in singles goes something like :

Two Little Boys - Rolf : The 1st single given to me
Sweet Talking Guy - Chiffons : The single my Dad wouldn't buy me - he wanted the New World single instead ( I forget what it's called, but he also bought the theme to Van de Valk at about the same time. The git )
Crocodile Rock - Elton : 1st record I bought with my own money ( 50 of your new pence from Petticoat Lane market )
Heard it Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye : The first musical influence from Big Sis 2, and got me started on soul music. I used to wonder why the hell this bloke would go for a walk in a vineyard, and who he was overhearing talking about his lovelife.
Time - Bowie : From Aladin Sane. Influenced by Big Sis 1. She had the album version that taught me rude words like 'whore' and 'wanking'. Knowing words like that made me very popular at school.

Jump to

Peaches - The Stranglers : My route into Punk and all it's glories.
Neat Neat Neat - The Damned : Sensible came from Croydon. Good enough for me at the time.
White Man In Hammersmith Palais - Clash : My mate Perce always managed to get 'Hammersmith' in there when he sungalong. he wouldn't believe it wasn't legit.
Eton Rifles - Jam : 'What chance have you got against the tired, aggressed'. Well, that's what we worked it out to be until we knew better.
Denis - Blondie : Horny Teenager. 'Nuff said
Kids in America - Kim Wild : Still a Horny Teenager.

More loud stuff until settling down in the mid 80s. Liked The Smiths, but wasn't gigging much at the time. Split with HID no1 in the late 80s

Then

She Bangs The Drums - Stone Roses : Wow. Just WOW.

And various naughty stuff in the early 90s. Lots of gigs. Loved

Basket Case - Green Day : Jump up and down
Killing In The Name - RATM : Jump up and down a lot
Get the Girl! Kill the Baddies! - PWEI : Jump up and down and sweat
Sheriff Fatman - Carter USM : Jump up and down, sweat and fall over.

Toned down a bit in the mid 90s ( SWMBO was beginning to have more of an influence )

Common People - Pulp : What a summer
Local Boy in The Photograph - Stereophonics : Arguably the best 1st single ever released
You Get What You Give - New Radicals : End of the Century and all that.

This Century is far too new to start reminiscing over.

Dancing with myself-Billy Idol
Bela Lugosi's dead- Bauhaus, 12" still counts I hope
A forest-The Cure
Electricity-OMD

Forget Placebo, but this lot bring back great memories for me as well :

Billy Idol - I had a collapsed lung, and used this track to prance arond my bedroom to see if the pain had gone away. If I collapsed in a heap of agony it hadn't mended, but the day I made it through I knew I could paaarrrrrtttttyyyy! ( Yeesss I know now... )

Bela Lugosi, Bauhaus - A brilliant 12". But the remake of Ziggy was a track to 'roll' to. Go down the local indy disco, wait 'till the floor filled when Ziggy came on, then just roll around on the floor knocking people over and getting kicked all over the place as well. We knew how to have fun in those days.

The Cure - fantastic! What was more depressing? Faith by the Cure, or Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division?

OMD - I was introduced to OMD by a bloke I introduced to golf. I still remember walking down the 5th at Couldon Court arguing if Enola Gaye was as good as Souvenir. Shame they went tits up after that.

Funny how all those days are sunny in my memory as well
