Judging by the posts on the World Cup threads, I would say at least 50 forumers.;)

Must agree with Chrisd, which I never thought I would type. Clough and Paisley. Both in different ways could deal with players with big egos.

I'm only a young whipper snapper compared to some of the auld coffin dodgers on here but footballers didn't have egos then like they do now.

Footballers in this day and age have their agents and others running round after them booking holidays/restaurants etc for them.

Paisley was successful with a squad of 14 players max, unlike some of the mob now who claim to need 25 + players in their squad.

I think that football now is a totally different game. It's much faster and played on super surfaces compared to the mud heaps of years back. Clubs have to name a squad in the PL OF 25 and obviously the transfer window didn't exist, so, if you had a player injured for a long period you could replace him. Also Richart is right, there were many egos about and footballers were extremely well paid back to the 1960's comparative to the public average.

Cloughie had an ego bigger than most of the footballers of today, but like Harry Redknapp (IMO) the best thing about him was his ability to get the best out of each individual, at Forest he turned pretty much washed up footballers into European champions and won the league with more than one club.

Certainly players had egos in the '60s and the top players were well paid. However, it was only the top players and their salaries were around 4-5 times the national average earnings.

Compare that with today where bog average players are being paid in excess of £1m p.a. or approx 34 times the national average and the top players are sometimes paid ten times even that figure. Can you really say that the game hasn't lost touch with both its roots and reality?

And yes, Cloughie did have a massive ego but he did at least achieve something compared with so many of today's Billie Big Timers!

(Can you guess I am not a big fan of how the game I once loved has developed?)
