Best Hole!!!

4 me it was the 6th at eyemouth a par 3 167 yards across the sea to a green on the other side and a wall running parallel to the right, on a good day with little wind a 7 iron but on a bad day with wind 3 wood

Castle Combe in Wiltshire is a pretty average track on the whole (extremel good condition though) but the par 3 17th is one of those holes you could stand there playing all day.

Short par 3 of about 155yds but the tee is about 120ft above the green which is surrounded by a stream. With no-one behind me I've stood there for about 10mins clipping balls off the tee, takes an eternity for the ball to get down to the green.

For me its that downhill par 4 at Murphs place. Can't remember the hole number but it really is a super hole, only downside is that its followed by the most evil par 3 you will ever see.

I've hit a driver at the 6th at Eyemooth! Cracking hole and a hole that I think is better the windier it is and also if the tide is in as it is not a hard hole when the wind is down and the tide out...not as intimidating!

6th at Dornoch...when we played it 15 months back they had stripped away all the gorse on the left hand side and it made it again a less intimidating par 3 than if they had left the gorse....maybe in time it will re grow.

the best hole i have played to date and it is probably not for the best looking hole but for the best feeling for the opportunity to play it is the 10Th at the belfry
to see it so many times on TV and mag pictures and then have the chance to play it then birdie it was amazing

Would agree this is a great hole Smiffy.
I think there are some tall pines down closer to the green which give the hole a slight Scottish feel.
It's certainly the hole that stands out in my memory from Chartham.
In fact, I live three miles away but probably haven't played it for 10 years - must get up there some time this year

-Just me being me, Best Hole from what viewpoint?
1st at the Old Course, just following through and seeing it sailing down the fairway after landing middle for diddle.
Or just the last one I played without being in the doo-doo.
Never had one that realy sticks in my mind, but then it is rather small and full of other crap.

Hi,
The 7th or 12th in the European club or about half the holes in Concrawood only played it once and cant remember what holes they were.

Have only played that course once, and that was about 9 years ago. But can remember that hole as if it were yesterday. Great hole

I used to live a few miles from Castle Coombe in Chippenham and we always made a trip there every year.

That hole is glorious , a real pleasure to play and to watch the ball falling throuhg the air against the backdrop of the hillside, praying you took the right club.

Big problem though was then negotiating the walk/crawl to the 18th up that mountainside path

Funny that Jezz. I have played Chartham a number of times, used to hold our Society's Spring meeting there every year. On more than one occasion I have thought "Scotland" when I have walked down that fairway. I guess I just love pine trees!
If you fancy a knock round there one day, give me a nudge. I always enjoy playing it, it's a fair course and is usually in reasonable condition.
I'll never turn a game down there that's for sure.
Just a shame I can't play that 17th bloody hole properly. That's a nemisis hole for me.

That par 3 17th is a bugger of a hole. The 16th is a gem too if you get it in the right position for the 2nd shot. I played 36 hole comp there last year and managed to finish birdie, bogey, eagle to secure a place in the Fire Service England team. :D ;)

On a course barely anybody will know about and all the snobs will look down their noses at ....... the 11th at Hassocks in Sussex.

http://www.hassocksgolfclub.co.uk/11

On a still day it can seem like the easiest par 5 in history to get on in 2. Every other day of the year it throws up all manner of surprises and I'll admit to laying up short of the 1st lake many a time with the wind in my face. Saw a low single digit handicapper play 9 off the tee in the December medal losing every ball OB right bar 1 in the lake.

The entire course looks like it should be easy being fairly short etc but I defy all but the best to play to their handicap from any other course in the area 1st time round without some major luck.

16th @ Turnberry is a great hole.

The "old" 8th at Rothesay used to be the best hole in the County.

There are a couple of really really good golf holes at Douglaston. Infact there are a few very very good holes there. Just make sure you drive it straight!

That's my home course, and you're right, a great hole but can be a card wrecker. For the big hitters a risk or reward hole and also one of the few birdie opportunities. Off the whites it's all of 200yds carry over the first lake, for the not so big hitters!

If anybody has looked at the so called virtual tour, don't be put off, it's the worst camera work I've ever seen, in terms of showing the course at its best. There's no height to it and doesn't show any features of the hole at all. Unfortunately the rest are just as bad.

If you're in the area, well worth a game.

Golfmmad.

1. 1st at Macrihanish
2. 10th on Sunningdale Old
3. 9th at Turnberry

Not necessarily in that order, can't pick a winner!

Been trying to limit this to stand out great holes that have no real place on the rest of the course. A lot of the other choices have been for exceptional holes amongst 17 other very good holes.

So to that end:

The 6th @ Painswick nr Gloucester, a rough and ready course played over common land. However once at the top of the beacon you get to play the 200 yrd(ish) par 3 6th which is one of the best 1 shotters I've seen anywhere.
