Best British XI

Ok here’s mine that I’ve seen live😂

Shilton
Neville
Moore
Adams
Cole

Marsh
McKay
Robson
Currie

Greaves
Lineker

Must mention Rodney Marsh saw him when he was playing for QPR at Charlton, the more the Charlton fans sang " Rodney is a fairy" the better he got probably the best indervidual performance I've seen he was simply unplayable that day

Sorry I’m just still shocked that people have Beckham in as a player in the best ever British 11 !! I would have him in the most overrated and more style over substance. Very good right foot but better than players like Barnes , Waddle , Giggs , Coppell , even McManaman - never in a millions years for me.

Of course you would.

Looks very much to me that the forum members who had the good fortune to see the greats of the 60s and 70s play in their prime have the best choice of players to pick from!

Out of all those who I've seen in the flesh, the 3 who really stand out for me are Hoddle, Gascoigne and Ashley Cole.

Umm yes I would - that’s why I said it. Do you believe Beckham was better than players like Barnes and Waddle ?
Maybe he didn’t see them live so they can’t be included in his team?

I only saw Barnes at the end of his career and I can confidently say that given the choice between either of them at the end of their careers Barnes would have got a look in.

So sad one persson has to take it down again. Its a personal choice. No right and wrong answer. All based on who you saw LIVE so all subjective. It was suppose to be a bit of fun and sad to see Beckham ridiculed. For some he may have been a mile above anyone else on the park live over one or a period of games

Beckham played to a different style than Barnes and Waddle. Beckham's best attribute was the diagonal cross field ball, and at that he was without doubt the best I've seen. He didn't go past people like Barnes and Waddle but, equally, they couldn't pass a ball like he could. He was a key player in the best team in the land, and then went and did it abroad.

Its like comparing apples and oranges. Both nice, but both very different.

I assume this is players we have seen in the flesh, and not on television. Supporting a team that has played mostly in the bottom two divisions I am more restricted than than most !

Shilton, saw him play for Leicester against Carlisle at Brunton Park when he was about 19. Man of the match.

Lee Dixon, saw him play for Bury and Stoke, and amazed it took him so long to make it into Premier League.
Keith Curle, best central defender I have seen play for us. Great pace and a bargain from Bristol City.
Steve Bruce, playing for Gillingham. How did he not play for England ?
Ashley Cole, only in the side because he scored a great own goal at Stamford Bridge to gift us a point !!

Bobby Charlton playing for Man Utd in Watney Cup against us. One of the all time greats.
Paul Gascoigne when he was playing for Middlesborough. Past his best but still a fantastic player.
David Platt playing for Villa in old 2nd division. Hardly in the game, but scored twice with Martin Peters type runs into the box.

Stan Bowles playing for Carlisle against Spurs in the Cup circa 1971. Brilliant player, easily best on the pitch. What a left foot.
Robin Friday, what a talent, so sadly wasted. He would only play for Charlie Hurley, so when he was transferred to Cardiff his career was over.
George Best, playing for Man Utd in Watney Cup against us. Best player I have ever seen.

Sorry Pieman, I can't squeeze Glen in, as it would mean leaving out George Best !!:)

Didn't see Jimmy Greaves play, but did see Pat Jennings who would get a place on the bench, and perhaps rotate him with Shilton.

Beckham had a lot more good games for England than Barnes. That goal against Brazil got him at least another 40 caps.;)

Maybe early days but towards his last couple of season with us he was superb and then when he went to Madrid did really well to the point the players went mental when they were trying to sell him - winning two CL with them and being a key player.

He wasn’t at the level of Barnes or Waddle etc but would have him every day over Beckham
Well that shows what you know. Liverpool bias I suspect. McManaman was vastly overrated, barely produced anything whenever I saw him. Did ok at Real purely because he worked hard in a sea of galacticos that didn't - and he was never a regular starter for them.

Beckham on the other hand, pure class. In the era of our supposed 'golden generation', most of whom were slated for under-performing in an England shirt, Becks single-handedly dragged us through games time and time again. Could put the ball on a sixpence from any range, set piece and wide delivery second to nobody in football. Over three times as many caps as McManaman, most of them as captain. There really is no comparison.

Sorry but I won't have a bad word said about Becks. :D

I agree. If anything I thought McManaman totally underperformed in an England shirt, and a bit like Barnes would go missing for large parts of the game especially the England matches I saw live. Beckham may have been overhyped in the press but he definitely had pride in an England short and especially as captain and produced more on the pitch creatively

Macca never producing 😂😂😂 sorry but that’s complete rubbish

McManaman at Real Madrid regularly started and ended up winning two titles and two CLs in his four year period there including scoring in one - 152 games in 4 years for Madrid. Beckhams record of games for Madrid is near identical bar winning just one title and surrounded by prob bigger Galaticos. I believe McManaman is the most successful English export to play overseas in terms of trophies.

As for England - Macca was starting each game during the tournament that until recently game England their best ever chance of winning in Euro 96. Beckham was captain of a team overhyped and constantly failing in each tournament- golden generation they said.

It's not as if we had a wealth of options, the other wingers in the squad were Nick Barmby and Steve Stone. Becks played 115 times at a time when we had Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, and many others, and he was so often our best player, rather than underperforming as McManaman did. McManaman was just a ball-hogger, pure and simple. Always trying to beat one too many men and no end product.

Shame we have to get bogged down in statistics and someone insists on point scoring and CANNOT accept an alternative point of view to the detriment of the thread isn't it. Bearing in mind it is supposed to be about seeing players LIVE I wonder how often they were at the Bernabau watching. It was suppose to be a bit of fun based on the best XI you have seen playing, not who got the most trophies. If I was you I wouldn't bother arguing as you know you can't win

I wouldn't have said anything but you can't slate Becks and get away with it, the man is a god. :p
