Have booked to play here next week with my son.. have subsequently read really mixed reviews on the course with it being described as a "hackers course" and very over priced but they were from 2011. Any views appreciated

I'd pay no attention to that.... its a fairly straightforward course with easy hazards, but that doesn't mean it's not fun or enjoyable.

I've played it twice and enjoyed my time on it....just don't expect to come home telling stories of how magnificent it is.

I would see if you can change it to the PGA at least or hope you aren't paying too much

It's not particularly any good

I'm a member of the derby. the course gets alot of stick because it sits next to two better courses. If it was a course out there on its own then views would be different. The greens are by far the most consistent at the complex and very rare to see them in bad nick. The new owners also chucked alot of money at it last year and has therefore come on leaps and bounds. Its a fantastic course and i promise you will enjoy it. I agree that it would be better to upgrade to the pga. However, i just held my works anual qualifier there and they all loved the pga but said it was a long slog and a tough course.

I play the derby twice a week and its currently in great nick. Dont listen to usual tripe, go and see for yourself. You wont be disappointed

I'll agree with this.
Places like Wentworth or Woburn have 3 courses arguably as good as each other. The Derby is not as good as the Brabazon or the PGA. Transport it 10 miles down the road and most would be quite happy to play it on a regular basis.
I played it 12/13 years ago, this is what I thought then....from what I hear it's what I would think now.

to be honest i can't remember that much about the course. the reason i give it stick is because that is where people who don't play golf who have somehow ended up at the belfry (for reasons unbeknownst) have a round as the requirements aren't as strict and its cheaper.

we had an agonisingly slow round behind four hackers in football shorts who had zero etiquette. e.g. chopping the ball on to the ladies tee in front of us from an adjoining fairway. chap just wandered up to it without a care and prepared to take his shot, ignoring us on the tee further back. we then let a single player through, but they didn't so we then had an extra agonisingly slow 9 holes behind them all.

so not so much the course that upset me, but the people they let play it. if you're playing at a quiet time, i assume it will be a perfectly enjoyable round.

Have played it twice while at the Belfry for company meetings but wouldn't play it again. It is a very average club course and over priced for what it is. Upgrade if you can.
