Ok we know this weekend say freak weather hit the uk, but how do you prepare for bad weather?

This weekend I beleive I done everything possible yet still managed to let the elements beat me.

4 wet weather gloves in the bag - all soaked by 9
Proquip Water proofs over Nike all weather trousers - soaked to the skin after 9
Ping water proof goretex hat - as above
Tm waterproof carry bag - soaked through after 9

I tried everything including clubbing up by up to 4/5 clubs into a head wind, a dry towel inside my jacket to keep my grips dry but it all fell apart after heavy drizzle turned into a full on bucket down wind driven shower for 2 holes.

I know conditions were bad as my pro quips never let water through as their only 18 months old, the tm bag has never let water in so I can only assume that it's mother nature 1 - Os 0

Any tips on beating the weather is greatly accepted.

nikwax your wp's, mine started leaking so I treated them on thursday and they were solid yesterday, I feared the worst but was dry as a bone afterwards & considering how wet it was that speaks volumes.

I still went through 5 gloves, soaked bag, towels etc but at least I was dry :)

One thing i did learn yesterday,is you have to have the proper gear.
The rain and wind didnt bother me mentally,i was up for the challenge.
What i did learn was,my shoes were not waterproof,my waterproofs
were not up to the task, top or bottoms.
Dont bother with umbrellas, complete waste of time.
However invest in a woolley hat,an essential piece of equipment.
Also wet weather gloves,we all had Mcwets, apart from making everything
feel slimey, they really work,we were all singing there praises.
The other thing i missed yesterday was a laser or gps, essential when
you dont know the course.

For me, the biggest thing is the mental side, mainly in accepting the obvious. You're

A) Going to get soaked

B) Going to get cold

or

C) Going to get soaked and cold

I played Saturday in what felt like a force 10 gale. Course was fractionally shorter (Some temp greens) but still managed to play to a 13 H/C.

Proquip rain suit - worked very well. Totally dry upper half, some wicking from belt region on lower but apart from that, very very good.
Under armour winter gloves - worn all the way from first to 14th when I had a small slip so swapped to the macwets for the remaining holes. Great gloves, soaked thru but worked great with the occasional wringing out :)
Under armour rain cap - totally dry
Shoes ... Soaked thru !!!
Motocaddy bag - better than expected, but I keep all my essentials in ziplock bags too:)

Wet weather in the south of Englandshire surely not? ;)

It was lovely here yesterday played Tain in tee shirt and shorts, no wind either, mmmmmm nice.

A pair of MacWets and the realisation you're going to get at least a bit wet.

I don't have super expensive waterproofs (Nike StormFIT), but I ended up coming in dryer than our Captain who had a full set of Galvin Greens on. The only wet parts of me were the tops of my feet (where the water had run down off my trousers through the top of my shoes) and around the mid-riff and neck area where the rain had crept in through the gaps in the clothing). Nike Lunar's proving they're comfy and water tight yet again.

With MacWets you don't have to worry about your clubs getting wet. My hands (with gloves on) and grips were sodden by about the 3rd hole, but I never lost grip all day. MacWets are easily the best invention ever. Many thanks to Gary for picking me a set up on his way down Saturday morning. towels, clubs, head covers and my dry weather gloves (which I forgot to take out of my bag, and are now probably ruined, despite having only used them a few times :() are all still drying, but I played OK yesterday despite the conditions. I have no idea of my score, but I halved my match against a 10 handicapper who didn't shoot more than bogey all day.

Would I choose to do it again? Probably not, but at least I know I'm equipped for it if I do.

interesting to hear gibbos comments about retreating waterproofs, i think in the 2 years ive had the proquip suit its only been worn around 6-10 times so i dont beleive it should need re-retreating again, may run a test on my glenmuir wind sheeter and go from there.

re the mc'wets, unfortunately they were in my other shoe bag so was forced to used weathersoft gloves, not a full wet weather glove but somewhere between the two, they were ok but no doubt not as good as a full wet weather glove.

Its funny gareth mentions attitudes towards a sure outcome. i klnew i was going to get wet, and i knew it was going to be cold. big winds and a good helping of casual surface water meant little to no run, it was carry everything. i was realistic in my club selection but think maybe looking back i over compensated for the weather. a guy within my 4 ball still shot 18 points on the front 9 playing hes usual game,

one thing i will say is fair play to the jocks, i know they tend to get a bad winter, and from my prospective i can honestly say playing in the conditions i played in yesturday on a weekly basis would definately dampen my enthusiasm to continue playing during poor weather months.
