Me and 3 pals are planning a game at Banchory sometime in the summer. I was just wondering if anyone had played there and if so what did you think of the course.
As a former Banchory resident (briefly) I've played it a good 12 or 15 times, played the 36 hole open a couple of times too more recently.
It's a very pleasant course, not too long so a good few chances for birdies. Clubhouse is nice and friendly with a good view down the first. Not a course for a blaster, need to think your way round, place the ball well off the tee.
Some memorable holes, 3rd is a neat downhill par 3, 8th is a quite odd dogleg right with the second shot uphill to a tricky green. 9th is great par 3 then you get a good stretch of holes along the River Dee, the par 3 12th is my favourite hole, makes me think of Augusta for some reason. 13 is a tough dog leg left from an elevated tee and a good hole. Closing 3 holes are average imo. 16th is the famous 'doocot', a wee uphill par 3 but its not hard.
Condition is generally good, maybe not after this winter, not sure.
All round a good place to play. I think playing off the whites makes it a much better test than off the yellows.
Have won a few quid there in Opens, I think the set-up suits a right to left player like me more than a left to righter. All the OOB is on the right.
Thanks Birdieman, I've just managed to get their website to load and had a quick look at the course planner. The course is a bit longer than the one I play on but I imagine the main problem will trees as they are not something we need to worry about up here.
