Balls - Would you bother?

Nice haul. I don't have a problem with playing with found balls (I won't play lake balls though). I've played God knows how many Pro V1's in my life and never bought a single one.

That's the great thing about my club. You find a better class of ball.

I always pick up any lost balls , if i have a solo round and there is nobody behind me i'll have a good root around in typical hot spots . Throw them in the shed , keep 20-30 for use in the garden ,then every now and then have a free visit to the range and fire them off . Although most of what i find are not what i would play , it is quite satisfying to top up the bag with those that i will play . Looking on ebay i think there are people out there that almost do it for a living.

Was out for a few holes by myself late yesterday afternoon and in the flat light of the gloaming finding balls was a skoosh - and picked up about 20 without trying very hard. I did however spot deep in some 6ft high and dense gorse a clutch of half doz balls sitting together - but as I already had a load and the light was going rapidly I didn't bother. Shall I go back this evening and ferret them out. It will be mighty prickly.

It's one of these silly things - digging in the gorse for golf balls is something I've done since I was a wee lad and finding a stash like I've seen is almost irresistible - what might they be? Half doz nice shiney Pro Vs? - or more likely (given where they are) - old Ultras,TopFlites and ProStaffs. Oooh...:)

Have to say that this sounds as if it had been written by me😉 Sometimes I go out late and there are certain spots around Bogside where, with a bit of rummaging, you can easily pick up 10 - 20 balls. Normally good balls as well.

I don't have a favourite ball anyway, so often use the ones I find.
Also made up a clicker tube with pro vs for short game practice from found balls👍

Cant beat it Alan, Scotscraig is the same , we get a lot of American visitors who hit them once and don't bother looking much if they go in the gorse, you can normally get a good haul of Titliest and Taylor Mades on a good day

We should run a sweep on the amount we can find at Trump next year😃

The amount I pay for me subs I can't afford much in the way of new golf balls. And I am not really very fussy what I use as long as it's a half decent ball. Using your buddies lost golf ball is not like being a bit too friendly with his ex.

Anyway - I found the wee group I spotted. Here they are in situ

The stash - including a couple of others in same place I couldn't get in the picture :)

..and whilst looking for the stash I found this lot

And so for 10mins rooting around - the haul LOL :)

I haven't bothered checking but I spotted fair few good ProVs and Bridgestones and Callaways (this is Surrey after all)

Add that lot to my couple of dozen I found last Saturday evening and last night...:)

I'll just note that perhaps the point of my original post was whether others would have the almost child-like delight I had in spotting the clutch of balls deep in the gorse (my top picture) - the delight that triggered my urge to ferret them out :)

I suspect that most of the 50 odd balls I've picked up over the last three evenings will go into my practice balls bag - though as I don't practice that much I'll bag them up and put them on the bric-a-brac stall of my church Christmas fair.

Id be surprised if you found any TBH, unless they were lost by the group in front.

Our place gets picked clean by a load of polish guys, Castle Stuart is the same. Ive seen one guy.. had so many balls he could hardly carry them all, Rucksack was overflowing.

I often fish the lake that runs along the 8th of the brabazon (nights only of course) i always leave first light with a pocket of premiums

Don't know if your club does the same or maybe you can suggest they do.

Anyone finding balls on the course they don't want or won't use, we have a couple of boxes were you can "donate" said balls to the Junior Section, surely that's better than leaving them or wasting them.

We have a practise chipping area that you pass on the way back from playing. People often throw unwanted balls there for people to use. We also get some dog walkers on our course who simply throw them in the middle of a fairway for the next golfer passing. I found a brand new ProV1 in a hole the other day. Had to be a walker put it there as why would a golfer leave a brand new, expensive ball in a hole? Unless it was someone doing a good deed a day to make someone else happy? If it was then they made me very happy indeed.

This sounds like a top idea!!

Once the pup is a little older & the courses are a bit quieter I will be going for a rummage around the local courses. Dog gets exercise, I get free balls & any that are no good to me will get offered up on gumtree/facebook as giveaways if the local courses don't have anything if place for unwanted balls.

I tend to stick to the one type of ball but any that I pick up either get offered to my PP's or if they are a premium ball they go into my practice bag so it's always worth picking them up.

Short answer...no.
Any balls I find/pickup in or around the course are put into the "one use at a range" bag.
I don't understand why people go hunting for balls which they propbably never use. To me, if you can't afford a ball you shouldn't be playing the game:)

So you'd turn your nose up at a brand new Pro V1 or Pro V1X at 4 quid ago ? 😉 have to say, it amazes me that people actually pay this just to hit them in the nearest hazard !

Why do you assume I play ProV1 or it's brother?
I only play balls that I have pulled out of a sleeve I have bought and of the type I play. As for losing a ball....it's only a ball and not gold bullion:)

Give it a golf ball to play with now so that by the time it grows up it will be more inclined to find them for you. There used to be an old guy at Walton Hall golf club in Warrington who had two golden retrievers who used to find loads for him.

i wasn't assuming you played those balls, sorry if it appeared that way but just using them as an example as a fairly expensive , top range ball, that may only have been hit once and it goes straight in your practice bag.

I don't spend too long looking for the ones I lose so there's no way I'd be going Bear Grylls on the golf course looking for others.

That said, since you enjoy it I say go get 'em

As I remember, you singlehandedly propped up the UK ball sales market in 3 days at Gainsborough.
