Was out for a few holes by myself late yesterday afternoon and in the flat light of the gloaming finding balls was a skoosh - and picked up about 20 without trying very hard. I did however spot deep in some 6ft high and dense gorse a clutch of half doz balls sitting together - but as I already had a load and the light was going rapidly I didn't bother. Shall I go back this evening and ferret them out. It will be mighty prickly.

It's one of these silly things - digging in the gorse for golf balls is something I've done since I was a wee lad and finding a stash like I've seen is almost irresistible - what might they be? Half doz nice shiney Pro Vs? - or more likely (given where they are) - old Ultras,TopFlites and ProStaffs. Oooh...:)

Short answer...no.
Any balls I find/pickup in or around the course are put into the "one use at a range" bag.
I don't understand why people go hunting for balls which they propbably never use. To me, if you can't afford a ball you shouldn't be playing the game:)

There you go - always interesting opinions on here!

Personally I cannot understand why anyone would actually buy a golf ball (or golf tees)

I love taking the dogs out to the nearby course and looking for balls. No feeling better than picking up a 1 hit Pro V in the rough. I can't really understand why someone wouldn't want free balls.

I used to meet an old guy with his dog most morning when playing solo. He said he give me a bag of balls he had collected. He asked is I'd collect them because he was not as fit as he would like. I said fine and did he want paying.

When I dropped by he had two sacks of about 25 kilos each, an ex-golfer he'd sorted, washed and cleaned the balls.

We agreed on a £100 donation to Help-the-Heros, so we were both happy bunnies.

No need to buy balls.

that's a great win-win story! What gents you both are..

As a kid I used to love doing this. The club I was a member at in the 70's was seriously tree lined. My best day was 54 golf balls. I'd put my waterproofs on and go crawling through the undergrowth. Didn't buy all ball all the years I was there.

The amount I pay for me subs I can't afford much in the way of new golf balls. And I am not really very fussy what I use as long as it's a half decent ball. Using your buddies lost golf ball is not like being a bit too friendly with his ex.

Anyway - I found the wee group I spotted. Here they are in situ

The stash - including a couple of others in same place I couldn't get in the picture :)

..and whilst looking for the stash I found this lot

And so for 10mins rooting around - the haul LOL :)

I haven't bothered checking but I spotted fair few good ProVs and Bridgestones and Callaways (this is Surrey after all)

Add that lot to my couple of dozen I found last Saturday evening and last night...:)

Amazes me too the number of balls I find without really looking, most of them look like they have only been hit a few times.

I have a shag bag of over 100 balls in mint condition, plenty of Pro-V's and Z Stars. Also have around 75 that have a few signs of wear that I use for practice.

Always get boxes of new balls for Christmas but they never get used as I find so many

Good effort, few more nights like that should see you through the winter!😃

there is something glorious about finding a good quality ball that someone has lost. Why would you turn a freebie down? The better the course then usually the better the quality of ball you find. I'm really looking forward to playing Close House this weekend!

I played a few weeks ago with a few lads from here. On one hole there was a slope which took the balls of the big hitters into a stream. We found about 6 good looking balls just out of reach. To get them we would have to step in a big old mud patch. Each of us thought long and hard before sadly walking away and leaving them there. It hurt.
