Playing in a better ball team stableford, a player has his ball marked on the green. Two players putt out so he lifts his marker and starts to walk off the green.... someone remembers three players must score so he returns to the spot he thinks his ball was, replaces the ball and putts out scoring two points. Can the moving of his marker be considered “accidental” or is there a penalty involved here

Tough I’d say. It wasn’t an accident. Unfortunately.Three players did score - pity one of the three scored no points.

I know this was a team event but, what would the situation be if the player were to replace the ball on a spot which was clearly nearer the hole than the correct original spot (I assume his teammates wouldn't complain if he sunk the putt).

2 stroke penalty but he may correct it without penalty before he makes a stroke.

But if he plays it he gets the penalty and:

(1) Player Must Decide Whether to Play Out Hole with Ball Played from Wrong Place or to Correct the Mistake by Playing from Right Place. What a player does next depends on whether it was a serious breach
  • Not a Serious Breach. The player must play out the hole with the ball played from a wrong place, without correcting the mistake.
  • Serious Breach.
    • The player must correct the mistake by playing out the hole with a ball played from a right place under the Rules.
    • If the player does not correct the mistake before making a stroke to begin another hole or, for the final hole of the round, before returning his or her scorecard, the player is disqualified.
