Ive just reliezed how crapy my local range balls really are
My Standard 7 iron shot usually is around the 160 yards, at the range they land 125/130
Ive always know they wasnt good balls but today it just reallly pisssed me off

Anyone else use bad range balls

If they have range ball written on them then completely ignore distance travelled, they are only useful for telling you the contact you make and the approx ball flight your swing deserves - anything else is a leap too far until you know better!

got so pissed off i took a top flight ball outta my bag and hit it, just to make me feel better

We have a strange dynamic at our range at my club, invariably a lot of people hit a few balls out of their bag onto the range before playing as a warm up, so if you now buy a bucket you get 30-40% range balls, 20-30% knackered balls and 30%ish proper golf balls, which can even include premium balls such as the pro V lol

Range balls so expensive, i can pay for better range balls but the its goes into sillly money

At My range I regularly hit 3 iron just past the 200 marker, they changed to lovely new balls, but they felt more rubbery, suddenly my career best 3 iron doesn't get within 20 yds of it, and it takes a well struck 4 wood to reach it now.
Now I just look for quality of strike, flight path and shape, forget distance.

But do you get the same ball flight from these balls?
If the composition of the ball, spin rates etc etc are not similar to your normal ball I would guess the ball dynamics are going to be different as well.

Makes the range only useful for quality of strike - and even that can be mis-leading with some of the range balls.

Forget how far it goes, all I think about is hitting it straight on a reasonable trajectory. If it is then great, if it is not then I am doing something wrong.

Agree.

The problem at my local range is that some of the balls are almost smooth they are that old and worn. I just chip those ones into the net. I'd probably only trust about half the balls to give a reasonable indication of how well I've hit them.

Luckily I don't have to go there any more as we have a new practice facility at our club with brand new balls to hit.

Ive had some range balls break into 2 when ive hit them, they are that old

My Local range has just had new balls in to replace all the old crappy ones, something like 10000 new balls for use, they have made a big difference to the lenght and flight they travel, i'd still say they go 30% less than a normal ball. But a big improvent on the old ones that were like old compound rubber and went even less distance and got ball flights light a barnes wallace bouncing bomb due to the missing chunks in them.

The range at my club though is a massive mixture of crappy range balls and Molitors, Top Flights and Pinnacles where people use old balls they've found and use them on the range as a last minute warm up for proper distance.

The range at Maidenhead I use has decent Srixon range balls. One make so in theory a standard ball to use. It definitely doesn't fly a normal distance but decent shape and reacts pretty much as normal so a draw, fade etc is clearly shown up and you can shape shots. To be honest I just focus on the swing, tempo and contact andnever worry about distance

When I managed a 34 bay quality range I set up a questionaire which asked:

Would you be prepared to pay more money for better quality range balls?
It was split in three handicap groups
Beginners
36 -15 Handicap
Below 15 Handicap

Guess what the replies said ?

Think I would have stuck with the range balls. LOL. Joking aside, some of the balls at our range are an excuse for a golf ball. They have been hit that many times that there are hardly any dimples left on them. I don't go there very often.

Range balls do tend to be pretty poor and don't fly anywhere near like a proper golf ball. Problem is its down to cost as idiots would end up stealing any decent balls.
A new guy has taken over the range I use and has spent some money on new mats and tarting the place up. He also bought aloud of new balls good quality but these have disappeared as I was told these range balls were going missing :p
