Authors I used to read

I know this has been done to death recently, but;

25 or more years ago, I used to read Alastair Maclean, Hammond Innes, and Desmond Bagley. Good old adventure / thriller yarns. Most of these aren't available for my kindle, which is a shame, as I'd quite like to re-read them, and can't be bothered with paperbacks. There was another author of similar books too, but I can't remember his name. It's really bugging me! he mainly wrote about southern Africa, and the coast and oceans around there. Stuff about missing u boats reappearing, and planes and ships crashing into an island that only appeared every 50 years. Rubbish really, but a fun read.

I used to read Wilbur smith too, but have read most of his again in the last few years. Well, the ones worth reading again.

I have nearly finished the Jack Reacher series, which has been good.

Any other authors out there, older or newer I should look at? Or failing that, can any one remember the one I can't!

I've never read any Jeffrey Archer, mainly because I don't want to give him any of my money. Dan Brown is trash, (I notice he has his latest rubbish coming out in may if any one is interested).

Ideally I'd like some ideas on authors whose stuff is available on kindle, and cheaply!

How about Patterson, or baldicci?

Not really into fantasy, Roman legions, sharpe, game of thrones type stuff.
 
If you liked Reacher then Baldacci definitely worth reading, earlier Patterson stuff decent but later stuff more quantity than quality. Legal based wise Grisham stuff quite good (again the earlier stuff better) otherwise some other worth a read are michael connolly, simon kernick, alex kava, jo nesbo
 
Roy Grace series by Peter James is very good. All of the Baldacci books I've read have been excellent.

Dan "Spider" Sheperd series by Stephen Leather is gripping. Leather has numerous other books out which are good also.

Nelson Demille has a few good books out.
 
Definitely try Clive Cussler, and Jack Higgins, thoroughly good books.
 
I quite like crime thrillers so I would recommend Ian Rankin's Rebus series or Stuart MacBride's Logan MacRae series, bit like Rebus but based in Aberdeen.

Interesting thread as it's already thrown up a couple of authors I've never heard of.

I seem to have very similar reading tastes to you Chris. Fortunately I do not have any of your other more questionable tastes.:whistle:

Archer has got to be in my top five most repulsive list. Gives me the creeps just typing his name.

HMS Ulysses one of my favourite books. Must read it again.
 
The Vince Flynn series of Mitch Rapp books are a good read IMO and broadly similar to the Reacher stuff.

Just put the whole lot on my kobo and am working my way through in chronological order. Worth a punt on them.

I think you should. He's my favourite author.

Some to consider are The Eleventh Commandment, Kane and Abel and A Matter of Honour just to get you started. Plenty of more recent ones too but those 3 come to mind.
 
Depends on your genre and if other types interest you.

Of the Reacher style books try Chris Ryan former SAS turned author his books are a seriously good read especially his earlier ones like Kremlin Device, Watchman and others.

Others I've read recently are Steve Berrys books very good start to finish and Sam Bournes series of books 2 very good authors.
 
I think you'd like spy thrillers by Robert Ludlum. The Bourne series of films were based on his books.Irvine Wesh is very good also.

Used to read Ludlum, but they got a Bit formulaic, ditto Jack Higgins, and also Cussler.

Really like Len Deighton, but read them all, and Frederick Forsyth writes a good book, but read them all recently.
 
Rebus books, Ian Rankin are very good, as are Harry Bosch, Michael Connelly. If you haven't read them try and read the earliest ones first.
 
Have read most of these authors, started off on westerns then si fi and onto blood and guts with the others.
Been reading the Scarrow books on the Romans have just finished again the Disk World series by Pratchett.
You could try the Pullman trilogy or the Dick Frances horse racing series.
It all depends upon the format you wish to read on, I have both the Kindle and the DSi.
Use the Calibre word library to change formats.
