My dad, who is 79, has seem to have never believed that I know anything yet trusts what others tell him even when it's something I've been telling him for years. Well we had a big bust up last week when I let fly with a few rockets that had been primed for years. Yes, I know you'll all think I'm a terrible son and those who will come in with " I wish my dad was still around he was my best mate". Well my dad has never been like that. So, he's bought a new telly, even though he does not need it, and, as I told him he would have to have, a soundbar and yes, as I told him he might have, a monster bass speaker. He get the stuff from a small dealer, paying Lord knows what!!!! So I was there yesterday and the soundbar tilted up aiming the speakers up into the TV stand blocking the sound. I tilted it forward to show him how it should be and the realisation was very visible that he'd been given, yes given, the bloke in the shop just brought the TV and the sound system up to him!!!!!!! He didn't even go and see it!!!!!!!
 
So I then altered the TV so that the picture was to his liking, he does not know or understand how to do this. Then I changed the speakers to reduce the bump bump of the bass. I then decided to check the price of the stuff. My dad has not even paid for the stuff and has been using it for a week!!!! The TV was brought out, well review in April 2016 so is 18 months old, and the only place I can find it is on e bay and that dealer only has one left! The sound system was reviewed in May 2105 so is over two years old!!!!! I have told my dad this and he is going to the shop today. i've told him that if he likes the TV to pay no more than £550 as their is a similar model still available in Currys for £570 and to get the thief, to remove the sound system as it is no use and to put in an up to date one with forward facing speakers.
I hope he does this, it's all he really has, and I cannot believe he will not let me sort all this out for him. He won't even pay for BT TV and BT sport, yet has a monthly bill of £25 just for the phone line alone!!!!!!

My dad was very similar, in that he would always ask the advise of certain other men even after I had advised him on something I was paid to deal with.
I just put it down to him being very old fashioned and him being the head of the family and not thinking any of his children would know more than men of older years.
Theres no point in getting angry or upset, it’s how he is and will probably be.
As my dad used to say, “you only get one innings”, so just try to enjoy what is left of his no matter how frustrating he may be.
Rest assured deep down he knows you’re only trying to look out for him.
 
My dad died 30 years ago so I never reached this stage. My wife has similar issues with her dad. He wont listen to her, take her advice. He continually buys poor stuff at over the top prices. Can't set it up, he just shouts at it, swears about it. I get sent in to hear the swearing, put it right, usually takes 2 minutes even though "it's faulty" or "stupid".

He's not my dad so I have stopped getting frustrated at how he behaves, I just leave him to it. Harder for my wife, clearly for you as well. All those little psychological digs and issues built up over the years nibbling away at you. I see it with her and I know it is tough.

When you see him, try to go to your "happy place", smile and let him be. He isn't going to change now.

I'm not alone then? Sounds very much like my dad. He's really turned into Victor Meldrew in a big way. Everythings wrong, life the lot! It's hard to go round and take the verbal beating twice a week. I have to sit there for an hour as he rants on and on. Ma=oans about everything but won't let us help him. Seriously suffering with diabetes but just does not get the carbs / sugar thing. I just want to shake him before it's too late.
 
'The getting the picture to how he likes it ' brought back a memory. When I visited my in laws as soon as they went to bed (very early) I used to grab the control and reset the TV to a realistic colour.
 
His big thing is everyone's life is better. Their houses, family, cars, holidays. You name it. He has a lovely house, in a prime spot in a Northumberland village overlooking the river mouth into the sea. His pensions far outweigh his spending, he will die a rich man. He has 3 healthy children, two of which still live locally, and 2 healthy grandchildren. Doesn't appreciate any of it. It drains me, sucks the joy from the world.

If we meet up at a forum get together we can compare who is the more Victor out of the two of them :cheers:.

Key thing to remember is to never turn into them. No matter how bad life gets, don't have that attitude.

Yup, mine has all that as well!!!
My wife sometimes tells me that I'm starting to do that (bad bit). I give her my best Paddington HARD STARE when she does.

Wait until yer mum rings you up and tells you she is talking to a lovely woman
( who she has never seen before ) who for the "cheap" price, £1500 , special for today only. She will never have to pay for her time in a nursing home." Eh when you thinking about going in". " Am not but you never know.".I told her to speak to her solicitor, who told her quite frankly it's bollox. The 5 % that is correct he can do for £300. But seeing as 99.9% don't go in a nursing home. Save your £300.
She got home and gave me a round of shags coz the solicitor who saved her £1500 charged her £70.
What bogged me off even more was me mum then dropped out how she had told said lovely woman much she had in banks etc
Oh ah, wait til you get a phone call telling you that your mum has been down town and got a good price for all her gold in the safe off a really nice man. Me brother did a brilliant job of impersonating Spider-Man climbing the wall. Why did she not mention before she was thinking of cashing in so.
A, we could of checked the price of gold online.
B, she could of offered/ sold it to her kids first.
C, not got ripped off.

Where's that bloody happy place gone that LT was on about. Am feeling it for you crazy, proper feeling it.
 
Update:-

TV and Sound Bar, muffled, bump bump bump, have been removed and old TV with universal speakers attached back in place. Superb picture, dad chuffed, it's like he's got a new TV, infinitely better picture!!!! Old speakers, unobtrusive, booming out the sound as clear as a bell, windows shaking!!!! Cost saving? £1150 and that's for the 18 month old TV !!!! The thief!
All's well. :D Dad's dead chuffed with his "new" old TV back in place. :thup:
