I go every year with a society. The courses are ok, in fact, considering the amount of traffic they get they are very good. They've had a lot of changes the last few years with a lot of new holes and some of the courses have a mixture of old and new holes.
The 2 18 holers are the Oakwood, which is the original course and is short but has some interesting holes. The Kigbeare is the newest course and is a bit of a monster, not necessarily because of the length of the holes but because of the distance between some tees and greens - they won't let you on withouta buggy. These are the best courses but there are 27 others which are as good condition-wise but not as good layout in my opinion.
You'll find the grass on both fairways and greens is a little longer than you would like but they do this because of the amount of use and they are perfectly playable.
They also have spare holes which they rotate into the courses to enable them to take holes out for maintenance.
They aren't the best courses you'll play but far from being the worst and the manage it really well. The only downside is it can be a bit slow.
Value for money wise, you can't go far wrong, we go in Sept every year, there's 28 of us and we pay £290 for 18 holes Thursday, 27 Friday and Saturday, 18 Sunday all with buggies, accomodation, 3 meals a day and prizes.
I like it as a holiday venue. Wouldn't want to play there regularly but as a place to go for a long weekend where the quality of the golf may not be the most important thing it's great. I stay on the golf complex (Ashbury) and they have plnety to do in the evening. Decent bar, snooker room, bowls (not as easy as it looks) bowling etc
I echo the advice to take a buggy. We didn't and nearly died from all the hills during the first round. The course is a bit basic but there is some nice variety and it was in good condition when we went in July.
