Are there any times when home advantage can be unfair?

Played my first round of the Volvo singles matchplay and as predicted, lost 4 and 3!

I dont usually bitch about courses but I do feel very aggrieved at this loss as I was beaten by what can only be described as a dreadful course....a 9 holer in the middle of Lochaber. The alarm bells started ringing when my opponent said 'you will find the greens here a bit different than what you are used to!'

Tee to green was fine but on and around the greens was a travesty. I have played on better winter greens than this! Did not hold any of the approaches despite being soaking wet, did not accept spin, bumpy with bare patches. I must have 3 putted at least 8 times, a complete lottery. My opponent (a very nice guy) apologised for the state of the greens and admitted that he (and his partner) entered all these type of competitions as "its a really cheap way of playing a lot of other different courses and that they had not lost very often at home".

Yes it was the same for both of us but here I believe that home advantage played a far more significant role than would have on a decent course with playable greens and to a point where it was unfair. There was no doubt in my mind that I could have won this match given a level playing field (no pun intended but they ruined a decent croft when the built this course) and perhaps playing on a neutral course.

So a thoroughly disappointing debut to this competition and made even less appealing as I had to drive 120 miles in the rain and got attacked by midges all the way round and still itching this morning.

i feel your pain, last year i played biggar in this comp and it is a municipal and greens and fairways for that matter were in a bit of a mess.

Guy i played with said they were like this most of the time, it was a pity as i nice little course, covered in divots not replaced and plug marks all overt he greens.

The locals were not the friendliest, one instance was i was standing on the 14th i think and a golf ball came shooting past me at right angles, now i was surprised as this would have ahd to have een a tigeresque kind of drive to get to where i was coupled with a monster hook,

no one on the course as group had just finished, i looked accross and there was the outing that had played before stading in front of the 18th green and teeing off accross 4 holes ...mental.

Our greens are pretty good, but I played a bloke who's a member of the PGA National course at The Belfry yesterday in the League To Dubai competition.

I think I only won because he struggled to get used to the pace of the greens. I only remember him hitting 1 missed putt past the hole, the others were all short.

I'm not sure I'd class it as unfair, but unless the away player has a good knowledge of the course I think it's a massive advantage.

This did make me laugh when I read this Chris ;)

Precisely why I didn’t bother entering this year. I got Lucky last year and had all my games as home draws. Only game I had a way was the group final which was a not to bad a course and only bad luck stopped me winning and going on to get soaked to the skin at Barrassie.

It works the other way though, what would the guy have said to his mates had he turned up at your course??

“What a bloody state, Dry fairways and greens that had grass on them and not moss. The cheat” ;)

And i have another interesteing conundrum! He told me that the handicap allowance was 3/4 which i actually disputed but he was sure as he checked it so we played it as 3/4.

Just gone onto the Volvo website and its actually a full handicap allowance. What is the ruling here? Anybody know?

Phone them up or email and ask what the ruling and hope it's not replay match?

Matchplay tie wasn't it ? Too late now as you've long since left the last green Rule 2-5 seems to cover disputes etc.
