• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Are Scottish Clubs more friendly!

My thoughts exactly Chris.

The best welcome I've had was in Ireland at a course near Limerick , it was 9.30 in the morning and 12 hungover lads looking for a thirst quencher, she couldn't serve us pints but would 12 bottles of cider do,jackpot, it went like that all day.
Similar is Castlerock, the guy behind the bar remembers us every year we go there, class club.

The worst was Gosforth Gc , from the minute we got there we were made to feel like something you would scrape of your shoe, from a disinterested pro,not able to get any food while a club match was stuffing there faces to members checking our bags to see if we were members of clubs, horrible place and crap course to boot.

That's appalling! You would have thought golf courses would want to welcome visitors in this current economical climate.

I plaed as a junior in sctland and was a membeat West Linton amd Bothwell Castle at different times and was always mae to feel welcome. Moved to England wen I was 16 and joined DerehamGC and was made to fee as welcome as a turd n a swimming pool, don't think they liked juniors. Was well received at Liberton Gc and Leven Links and Whitekirk. Morgs, there are loads of courses in Edinburgh and around. Braid Hills no1 is worth a visit and the 16 ile trip to West Linton wouldn't disappoint you either.

If you fancy the 16 mile trip out to West Linton, let me know. Diary permitting, I'll happily sign you on and I'm sure we can arrange to get you a loan of some clubs. If all else fails, my mate is sitting out this year with a busted anterior cruciate ligament, so we could get a shot of his.

As for the OP, I don't know if Scottish clubs are more friendly. I have on occasion been made to feel like a fart in a spacesuit at Scottish clubs, and like a long lost brother at English clubs. And vice versa.

It does seem to be gross generalisation to me.

But I have never played golf anywhere apart from England and Portugal.

And living in Blackpool have a tainted image of our friends north of the border;)

I'll bet you do, the only Scottish visitors you see are generally not sober or they have come for a holiday 30+ years ago and failed to go home.

The thing was we played Stacksfield GC the day before i think kev of the tee is a member there and the guys were superb there they couldn't do enough for us as we were eating and drinking there for a good while after our round.
Must admit my course the welcome from the Pro is spot on but when visitors re trying to book golf there poor to deal with which is nonsense in todays climate

I've had some mixed welcomes in England, Ganton being one of the best.

However, I can't think of one bad welcome in Scotland at a golf club. Great courses, friendly people - buggers when they get ale down them though......;):ears:

Your welcome.....

The scores for the Leven Open seemed a tad high for such a very good calm day, how did you score.
the round took 5 hours 15 minutes and I ha 1 Los ball. I was 2 outside my buffer zone so without the Lost ball I would have been good. I have a Sky Caddie and unfortunately the battery packed in after 3 holes when. Was 2 over and had missed 2 five foo putts. The greens were superb and the food, fillet steak and chips with trimming under £10,

Thoroughly enjoyable

understand what you are saying; however 30 different courses in England each year for the last 4 years' is more than the majority of people on here. Additionally I will be going again next month to play 3 courses including Royal Dornoch and have played 6 different courses in Scotland for the last 3 years and as I said initially they are WITHOUT exception extremely friendly and well organised and most welcoming

Hoping to get a round in when we visit Edinburgh for 4 days in August for the Military Tattoo. Unfortunately won't be taking anything but my shoes so would be looking to hire a set while I'm there, not ideal i know. Will be staying at the Braids Hill hotel, any suggestions of the best place to play would be great from you guys,

I appreciate the offers for joining you guys at your clubs and will certainly let you know nearer the time. Distance for travelling may be a problem as we will be flying up from Plymouth and getting a taxi into Edinburgh so were'nt looking at hiring a car. Are clubs available to hire at the Braids, seems like a good course.

I've really only had 1 or 2 'less than friendly' welcomes anywhere - at least on the first visit! Both that spring to mind were in England.

There seems to be a different attitude to Golf and Golfers - members and visitors - in various parts of the world. Scots seem to have the on that suits me best!

you're right mcbroon, same here, but the experience at Dereham GC made me pack the game up for 19 years.
