I'm looking at organising a society day and have the following courses in mind. Has anyone played any of them and have any views:

Petersfield
Hockley
Maidenhead
Bramley
West Berkshire

Cheers

Bramley, I remember to be quite short. Didnt even use driver the whole day I played. Conditions were soggy, but greens were fine, soft fairways though. Not a great deal of excitement though.

Petersfield, quite forgetful really, to be perfectly honest I don't remember a great deal about it, which means it was neither good enough for me to revisit, nor bad enough for me to remember to avoid.

West Berks, I played off the back tees, and remember hitting a lot of longer irons into smaller greens. Quite varied in the hole layout and a good day out.

Played Petersfield and Hockley, agree with comments above about P/field.

Hockley is OK but if you play in summer the rough can be brutal which can lead to slow rounds if people are spraying it about. It's got some decent holes and some very average ones.

played west berks loads, couple of mates are members there. its a decent enough track for the money, like Don says, some people find it boring, but it presents a few challenges, one being its length! it has matured a lot over the past few years and is now pretty well looked after with nice true greens etc. bunkers have a bit to be desired, nothing a few tonnes of new sand wouldn't fix.. there is a really tricky par 5 which is nigh on 600yrds off the whites, but has a dog leg after about 150/170 so a tough ask for par (well it has been for me!!)

There are better courses within a few miles, but still worth playing IMHO. For a midweek society though probably a decent shout,

I have played West Berks a couple of times. Quite like it and find it quite challenging. Fairly long with tree lined fairways that feel a bit tight. Club house is a bit dated but it's good value for money and would play there again.

I play in a Society where we limit our budget to £60, to include bacon rolls and evening meal. Courses in roughly the same area that I can fully recommend are West Surrey (Godalming), North Hants (Fleet) Alresford and Blackmoor of course !

Haven't played any of the course you are looking at, but heard good things about Hockley (Hilly and windy though) Not heard anything good about Petersfield which is just up the road from my Club.

Trying to get 27 holes in at £65pp or there abouts so West Surrey and Blackmoor are out. Alresford was on the list but some of our older members need buggies and they don't have them. We were going to Guildford but no buggies there either so had to bin that. The rough at Hockley is putting me off as we have a wide and varied level of abilities. West Berks, Bramley and Maidenhead seem favourite at the moment. West Berks is cheaper but it's a 100 mile round trip from the core of our membership so petrol will be more.

North Hants is one I'd forgotten about so I'll look at that, cheers

Hockley is a good test, always in great nick, the greens can be very quick in the summer.

It can be windy, but it's a nice spot with great views. Drains really well also

I have heard good things about Hockley and it is supposed to drain very well. West Berks is boring and conditioning has always been average at best when I have played. I have only played Maidenhead once but I liked it and would definitely go back - even if I did get told off for the wrong colour socks!

Have to agree with therod's comments. It's a great all year round course as they keep it in great shape. It is a real test. It can be windy up top and the rough can get brutal in the summer, although they are looking to improving that in the future. There is a new course manager and a lot if work is going on at the moment to improve things further for the summer.

It's a great course though and I'm very proud to be a member there.

Another course to consider down here is Stoneham. It is an excellent course. Expensive, although a friend of mine who is trying to organise a society day says it was about the same price as Hockley.

I've played Bramley a few times & thoroughly enjoy it.
It's not the longest, but that doesn 't mean it's going to be easy and the greens are always superb.
It's a very pretty course & the staff always make you feel welcome & important and the pro, Nick, has a wicked sense of humour.
Puttenham is also a course worth considering. It's a better test of golf than Bramley but finishes with a par 3 which I never like. Not quite as welcoming as Bramley in my opinion.
I hope this helps,

Slime.

Hawkeye, don't know if you have considered Sandford Springs.

I have played a couple of golf days there and enjoyed them. They seem well set up for them and they have 3 loops of 9 all quite distinct so you get 27 different holes. Plenty of buggies too.

I have no connection with them by the way.

Thanks Mashie, I did but we have been there before so I am trying to get somewhere we haven't played.
