Anyone here remotely thinking about going to Brazil for the world cup?

Not me. Football is not my cup of tea.

The BBC have a bit about this on their Sport pages. Looks more expensive than I thought it would be.

Nope. Followed England to the 1988 Euros in Germany and swore never again! Mind you Brazil is a bit more exciting!!

Travel guy on BBC this morning said a current package being sold for £7k is a bargain. That is for flights, accom & tickets to group games.

Doesn't appeal to me at all. Everything over priced & let's be honest as soon as England come up against Germany,Spain,Argentina,Brazil or even Belgium were out any way. Negative but true

do your research first........has to be the mantra for anyone thinking of going. There are some seriously dodgy areas that even the police don't venture into. That plus the costs are horrendous even before you factor in the world cup. Expect to be robbed....legally and (hopefully not) illegally.

No chance, Brazil is a poor country, dressing in a foreign shirt will be like wearing a ROB ME sign.

Plus...I don't care about football THAT much

In my many travels there I can say that yes, Rio has some unsavoury parts and some great areas too where you are quite safe at pretty much any reasonable time. People who stay in Copa think it's a kip/dangerous and wonder what the fuss is about, Leblon and Tijuca are far safer. Outside Rio there are many impoverished areas with some of the nicest most welcoming people you could meet. I travelled regularly by local small van taxis, the only white person for miles probably, and never felt unsafe once. People work the land, they staff factories, they're just trying to get by.

It's like seeing a rough part of London on the news and saying I'd never go to England. Please know I'm not having a dig, I'm sure this is a very commonly held viewpoint and when you see what gets reported its easy to see why, hopefully I can share some perspective.

If you are planning on going the prices from BBC are spot on - high. Brazil was for a brief period a nation on a phenomenal climb, the bubble is burst, they've taxed themselves back into stasis and other South American countries are now emerging. At the time the World Cup and Olympics were announced Brazil was on a high, you should see it now, people protesting in the streets because the boom was swallowed up in corruption and legalised corruption (nonsense tax levels and nothing put back into infrastructure/welfare of the people).

I wouldn't go to Brazil for the World Cup, but not for fear of being robbed by some poor person who has nothing and no hope of ever earning as much as one of us carries around on their wrist, its because the people who benefit from the "bonanza" of such an event arriving will not even nearly be these people, let alone the average working man who is getting nailed and every time he asks "wheres the money going?" someone says the world cup. Same thing happened in Cape Town, another great city whose residents got very little from the world cup save some oddly positioned stadiums which allowed shanty towns to open as public bars and for once the (extremely welcoming) locals actually benefited - for a couple of weeks.

The city of Rio and the surrounding areas are absolutely the most beautiful/fascinating places I've seen on my many travels, go there and enjoy it for that, not for some bloody football match played by millionaires for the benefit of billionaires.

If I was going to Brazil it would be for the Olympics as there's much more chance of British success.

I have a mate that lived out there for 3 years and he said that it's not as bad as portrayed. Yes there are some really dodgy areas, but any half sensible tourist would never be anywhere near them. As for prices then it will be the same as any country hosing a major international sporting tournament, the locals will try and wet their beaks. And if you end up having a meal in an international chain hotel then yes it will cost a fortune. But then again that is the same anywhere in the world.

He thinks the potential problem could come from the people wanting to disrupt the tournament like they did for the football tournament played this year. As a lot of poor are not happy about the money spent on the world cup and Olympics. And whilst they wont take it out directly on the tourists/fans through robbery/muggins etc etc, they will target the events themselves.

How dare you use facts, personal experience and common sense to justify your post as opposed to believing lazy stereotypes and misinformation gathered through ignorance and prejudice?? ;)

You're as bad with your sensible mate, go on admit it you're part of a drug cartel who can't wait to see them tourist dollars roll in.

Im thinking about it; like others have said, Brazil isnt as bad as made out just have to be sensible and with an event like this really plan it.

Main reason I'm considering it is that I don't fancy Russia as a place to visit, and realistically the next 2 world cups will be my last chances to go until I'm much older.

I loved the olympics last year and id love to experience something like that for a few solid weeks as a holiday.

Went to Germany in 2006. A brilliant experience.
We stayed in Forbach just over the border in France and saved a fortune, of course border hoping isn't really an option in Brazil.:(
If you can afford it GO. I wish i could. :(
As me gran used to say you can't take it with you. ;)
