anyone any good with money and maths??

Try and work this one out.

3 people share a hotel room for £30 a night (£10 each).

Later the manger realises the cost is only £25 per night, so he sends the porter up to the room with £5 change for the group. The group decide to tip the porter £2 out of the £5 and have £1 each back. In effect they have now paid £9 each for the room and tipped the porter £2 from the original £30. £9 + £9 +£9 +£2 = £29.

where did the last £1 go???

They each paid £8.33 plus the pound they got back which totals £9.33X3=£27.99 plus £2 tip =£29.99 rounded to the closes ten is £30.00!

They each OWED £8.33 (£25/3). They each paid £9, so they each tipped the porter 66 pence. £0.66 x 3 = the £2 tip. Same thing, but a different explanation.

Well copied!! :D

But that's how you do school work nowadays isn't it? :D

The room was £25, plus a £2 tip = £27. £1 each left over from the original £30. So they've only spent 3 x £9 which equals £27, plus £2 = £29 :D

Aaaarrrrrrrgghhh. It's still hurting my head. :D

This is the line where you are going wrong...

"So they've only spent 3 x £9 which equals £27, plus £2 = £29"

They have infact spent £27 which INCLUDES the £2 tip.

You shouldn't be adding the 2, you should be taking it away which leaves the £25 spent on the room.

You are adding £2 to £27 which already accounts for the tip, so you're adding the tip TWICE. :D

Room £25
Tip £2
Change £3
---------
Total £30.

Hope this helps :D

Cheer up Dave...

enjoy the view...

If you're going to post pics of stations and you're from Shropshire then you could have picked one from the Severn Valley Railway!!

I loved this place as a child, my nan lived just up the hill... (god bless her)
