I played in a three team stableford comp on Saturday, best two scores counted off 3/4 handicap. It was on the Roman Road, par 70, sss72 from white comp tees. We finished in 7th place with 73 pt's.

1st place 86pt's
2nd place 84pt's
3rd place 76pt's

Is that a very high score to win this type of comp and what about the gap between 2nd and 3rd place ?
The teams in 1st and 2nd places were last out again and had the worst of the weather.

It's not sour grapes as we weren't in the mix anyway.

Any thoughts ?

Hi Squire,

The top two are very good scores but not outrageous in my experience. I base this partly on the fact that I was in the winning team at a comp played on the same scoring basis at The Oxfordshire last year. Our hanidcpas on the day were 6, 10, 11 and 12 and we ended up scoring 95 points!! OK we were off the yellow tees and the weather was very calm indeed and I know all our handicaps were totally genuine!

I always think in this kind of comp you should aim for 85 as a minimum if you want to have a chance of winning.

Hope this helps.

Enjoy the Ryder Cup!

Matt

So individually 34 points is playing to handicap.

It's best two of three every hole, but only 3/4 handicap each.

Seeing as in 4BBB if playing 3/4 h'cap, anything over 40 points is good, I'd say anything over 72 here was good, and those top two scores are just outrageous.

Thanks boys, I was just thinking how high the scores were as I've not played in that sort of comp before, looks like my team will have to up our game next time.

Cheers

ps, handicaps of the winners are 6, 12, and 24.

Its a toughie but I guess no different to a guy waltzing in with a 43 pointer on his own. When HTL and I won our comp in the year we had 44 points off 3/4 handicap so it's not impossible but would need three guys all making a lot of net birdies. I think from memory we even had one hole where we only got one point having both made a bogey

We had a 4BBB stableford last month. Course was far from easy, we played off the whtes. The team that came 4th had 84 points, 3rd 86 points and 2nd 90pts.

The winning side amassed 99 points (or at least that's what their card said). That's an average of 5.5 pts per hole!!!!!!

I remain sceptical about the validity of the score but if it's an accurate account that's tremendous golf.

That was not a 4BBB stableford unless it was 36 holes. That must have been a team comp, both scores to count.

Sounds a little funny to me, especially if they were last out in the worst weather.

Would have said that there was probably a few gimmies and free drops involved but with a mid single figure h/c playing I wouldn't have thought this was the case.

This isn't a 4BBB its a best two from 3, with less than full handicap
I would say the first and second place scores are very high not impossible but questionable

Good but not outlandish played in 1 myself off full handicaps we came in with 93 points and finished 3rd, an AM AM you will always need over 90 points to win more if u have 3 scoreing on a couple of holes, in both formats a couple of birdies on the low index holes can give a big boost.

Wasn't an am-am though, it was a 3 man team, and only off 3/4 handicaps.
