any PC geeks around....Need help

In need of help from our pc friends.....

Home pc went abit funny whilst on the net (and no,wasnt filth this time),

and now i cant open any programs ,firefox,ccleaner,IE, etc....

When i do try i keep getting a message "Security Shield"-infected with spyware/trojan,do you want to reg your copy and remove all threats now.

If i say yes it then takes to another page where you have to pay for program to remove threats.....
any1 anyideas as to what it is and any way of getting rid??

Definite virus. Don't click to accept. You will need to run a program such as MalwareBytes to get rid of it. I'm sure I have seen Phil the Fragger answer this sort of query. Sure he will be along pretty soon!

Sounds like you have downloaded fake spyware removal software, do not enter any payment details whatsoever.
If you can start by trying a system restore and go back a few days/before it started.
Failing that you could try restarting in safe mode and uninstall the offending software. Malware bytes, Microsoft security essentials and a few other programs will scan and remove most types of this stuff.
Google the actual software and organs the words removal instructions too as there could well be exact steps listed to remove it.

when you restart it, press F8 like a woodpecker, tap tap tap till you see a menu
Opt for "safe Mode With Networking"

when it starts it will look a bit different, but dont worry
open internet explorer or Firefox, nip over to www.malwarebytes.org and download the malwarebytes program, its free, the file is called Mbam.exe, open it, run it update it and scan with it

Just what I would have said, malware bytes is best by far. I normally run it a few times just to make sure

its a scam and you cant get round it - i had it about 6 months ago
restart your PC and restore to a date before you had the problem - a couple of days is enough

try a free programme called stinger or AVG free version.

activate them and get them working on clearing the virus you have

Aye - its a particularly annoying one - u just cant seem to find a way past it to get to ur pc. if it has dodgy spelling in the message then its the same one i had
we restored back 3 days and PC has been fine since

Ran the malware but no joy so done as Heidi said and restored earlier date and seems to be working ok...fingers crossed.

What free anti-virus are others using? im using avast are there any better out there??

Im gonna start running malware now n again,i also use ccleaner and spybot when i remember are there any others i should run to try help system from going on a go slow....

Install a good anti-virus software as it's likely this will come back. Restore only replaces certain settings in your system This will have probably attached somewhere in the registry and will be dormant until you do something specific and, boom, it's back.
If you already have a decent AV in place it will pick it up and chop it

We just installed a basic Norton afterwards - and its all good

am blaming the old man and his visits to salubrious websites.

AVG Free Home version is good.

I've had AVG for years. It does a fantastic job. I do pay an extra £20 odd quid per year for some extra protection. Used to have Norton many years ago but got tired of them sending a pop up every two minutes to tell me a threat had been detected and sorted. It was driving me mad.

I would stick with Avast, just make sure you have the latest version,

Most of these type of attacks result from clicking on a dodgy link on a web page, before you know it, an official looking window opens up saying that the system has detected that you are under attack, "Click Here" to sort the problem.

Of course when you do "click there" you download all the trojans and effectively bypass all your security as you have invited the bugs in.

if you have avast, any virus alerts should be from the avast program, not some program you have never heard of before

Some of these things are grim. I only ever messed up a PC once after getting a pop up which I clicked on.
Horrible....ended up formatting and re-installing the lot.

System restore is a useful tool, not so much because it gets rid of nasties (which are probably still there, but hidden) but because you can usually uninstall/install anti-virus more successfully as nasty viruses tend to stop the user doing anything.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It came 2nd in the free category last time I read a review. I find it far less busy than AVG or Avast (which is particularly annoying).

I don't know why anyone pays for AV. I was given a Toshiba laptop not so long ago on the condition that I either destroyed the hard drive or erased/formatted it using dban or similar. It had used AVG free from day one, and I uninstalled that and ran MSE instead. Nothing, virus free, totally clean. Considering this laptop had been used for extensive torrent downloading and goodness knows what else, you have to take your hats off to the top free products.
