Got a Marantz M-CR603 all in one system. Turned it off yesterday, apparently working fine, won't turn on again today, either by the front switch or from the remote control. Changed the batteries in the remote, checked power at the wall socket & the fuse, all good; basically the thing appears dead. Anyone any ideas what that might be & if it might be fixable, or if it's just throw it away & buy a new one?

Thanks in anticipation of some helpful replies……….

Sometimes there is another fuse in the unit itself - usually near where the power cable goes into the unit.

Local repair shop might diagnose what needs fixed if you can find one you trust.

Thanks Ian, I had considered that but there's no mention of that in the manual. I will take it back to the point of purchase as they are pretty good & it hasn't been overused & see what they say.

As regards a local repair shop, do they even exist any more? Can't say I've seen one locally, think we pretty much throw it away & start again these days but I will have a look.

The CR603 has an internal 5A quick blow fuse. As Ian says it is on the inner power distribution board. Should be easy enough to fix, assuming nothing sinister caused it and a PCB has fried.
Might need an upgrade

Just got (well last week) a nice new Marantz PM6005 amp and a lovely Project Debut Carbon turntable with some very nice Monitor Audio MR4 speakers for the spare room. Sound is phenominal.

Thanks Greig. Unfortunately there's a couple of other things more desperately in need of an upgrade than the Marantz (and I'm one of them!). However, if it needs replacing have you got any recommendations? The deal is it MUST be a one box system; that was the trade off for Mrs BiM suffering a pair of floor standing speakers (Tannoy Mercury v4's) in her front room. I'm looking at either the Denon D-M40DAB or the Marantz M-CR611. The Denon loses out by not having internet radio but the Marantz has lots of features that we wouldn't actually use so I'm torn. Any advice on either or alternative suggestions gratefully received.

Well I can see the little beggar, now got to work out how to get to it…………….

Found a lot these days they are soldered in, not a biggie if you have a soldering iron and some spare solder. A pain otherwise.

On possible replacements, I would probably look at Cambridge Audio's two main melody streamers, The One and the Minx. The One looks tidier and the sound is very rich for a small unit but lacks internet capability, the Minx is impressive but larger and sounds superb, paired with the V4s they would compliment each other well IMO. The V4 is a very capable speaker as long as it's not getting a lot of push from volume where it can colour and distort a bit, used to have the V4i before I got the Dali Zensor then Ikons in the living room.

Ian, Greig,

Thank you both, have got to the internal (infernal!!) fuse, which had blown, replaced it, and the moment that the power turned on it blows immediately, repeated it with the same result so there's obviously something more up with it. Given that and the fact that the CD transport was a bit dicky, I'm coming down on the side of Greig's upgrade which will endear me to the Chancellor, aka Mrs BiM, no end. I owe you both a pint when I bump into you.

Greig,

Having looked at the Cambridge & the reviews and having had a quick chat with the usual hi-fi shop, they've steered me away from the Denon M40DAB with the Tannoys; any thoughts on the Denon CEOL RCDN9?

Thanks again.

I found the Cambridge Minx to be a superb bit of kit but just not what I was after at the time.
On Denon you will never really go wrong with any of their kit, Marantz are the same company (imaginatively called D&M Holdings).
The only advice I will give with using the V4s as your monitors is try to match power to power so that there is lower chance of over driving the speakers as its the one weak point of those speakers.

Thanks again Greig, ended up going with the Denon CEOL RCDN9; fell below the Marantz on price but the quoted power was well above the Denon M40DAB, also avoided buying Marantz as this one barely lasted 4 years whereas the Denon M38DAB has been going much longer with no issues (although that may be a moot point bearing in mind that Denon & Marantz are apparently the same company…..).

First impressions are that it might not pack as much punch as the Marantz but the clarity and detail are streets ahead and it is a good match with the Tannoys. It lacks a number of the features of the Marantz, but as they were features we never used we aren't missing them. The internet radio works better than the Marantz, there's only one auxiliary but we've only got one (turntable) as the TV has a separate system and most importantly it's not bigger than the old one so the management is happy………..
