With no practice this week I got a call last night saying I was in the medal as 2nd reserve. I went to the practice ground for an hour this morning but it wasn't great. Went out with no fear expecting a bad round and 0.1 back. I actually played some decent golf especially on the front nine and was out in one under my handicap and +5 gross.

By the time I rolled a birdie two in at 13 and parred 14 I was + 6 gross and in with a great shout of a handicap cut and maybe even a top 3 finish in my division. The 15th isn't hard as par 5's go and even a hooked tee shot shouldn't have been the end of the road. I hit my appraoch (third shot) into a bunker, took two to get out and walked off with a double.

The 16th has always caused me problems with OB twenty yards left and running the length of the drive. No surprise when I hit a quick horrid snap hook OB. I smashed the reload and made par at the second attempt for another double.

However as I mentioned last week I hate par 3's (11 over for the 6 on the course in the club champs last week). I hit a horror tee shot at 17 so far right it had cleared the rubbish and was in the open by the 15th tee. However my luck ran out. I stuck it in the bunker and then took 6!!!!!! goes to get it out. I chipped on for 8 and made a great single putt from 15 feet for a 9!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! even managed to chuck in a double up the last for good measure

In the end I signed for a nett 76 (+6). Even if I'd bogied the last four holes I'd have been round in nett 68 and may have had a shout of a top 3 finish and would definitely have been cut back to 11.

I hate golf sometimes. I guess the positives though was my play for 14 holes and the fact that I played well with no practice at all. Maybe there is a lesson in there somewhere

Any chance of a cut on Stableford?

Heck, just be grateful you are playing. I am into my 6th week off, and will be lucky to make Cooden beach on the 20th. I just want to play. Crap would be ok, just playing would be nice.

On the upside, the decorating is going well.

Have had builders in since Feb. Every room has been trashed to a certain extend. Couldn't start sorting it out til July, as the builders keep undoing every thing I do. Now got 4 weeks to decorate 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, hall, landing, kitchen, dining room, lounge, d/s bog, and utility. Every thing needs doing, as all skirting and architrave is new, and all walls and ceilings need painting (many need steaming to get rid of old wall paper too, some even need replastering). Spent today putting new laminate down upstairs. Fun. Nearly as good as golf? Not quite. Got the new kitchen due to be fitted on the 13th Sept. Was out choosing the granite for the work tops on Friday. The count down has begun to moving back in. Yippee.

I wouldn't say I was slow at decorating, there is just so much to do. It will be worth it though.

Did you know your score after 16 at the time, or did you work it out after?

You say you could have bogied the last 4 holes for a 68. Have you ever thought of playing them for bogey and maybe picking up a one putt for a par here and there?

3w off the 15th should be safe enough. A hybrid off 15 to keep it in play. Either a hybrid at 17, or even a mid iron to leave a full SW, for a change. 3x mid irons to reach the 18th safely, maybe.

Or if that doesn't rock your boat, how about making a special trip to the range one time, and practise a 3/4 swing 3w, to minimise body movement, and give you a stock safe shot that'll go 90% of your full shot, but with the confidence of knowing it'll be straight.

Just a couple of things to think about, maybe.

I sort of new the back nine was pretty good and hadn't counted my score on the front. I thought I was only +3 gross even after the double on 15 for the back nine. The stupid thing was I had contemplated 3 wood down 16 anyway and rejected the idea. If I'd have taken it I'd have been forced (possibly) to lay up or would have had 5w/3H in and assessed my options. 17 is 218 off the whites and should have been a 3H all day long downwind but I put a rubbish swing on. the problem came from having a very thin slice of green to land on and a 52 wedge would have been too much and so tried to bully a 58 in and came up short. Then the bunker horror started.
